My wife is looking for a new camera. I didn't want to hijack this thread "Looking for a Digital Camera", so I started my own.

Looking for a 5MP+ and at least 10 optic zoom. Budget is around R3000, but can go up to R4000 if I have too. Don’t have any preference with brand, but am bias toward Nikon :) Any pointers and tips to select a suitable camera will be appreciated.

The 10x zoom is also not really that important, I just don't want to get a 3x zoom that can't be used for anything.

Or...if you want to go abit over 4k, you can get the FZ18, with 18x zoom :)

Think its about 4500. Also on Kalahari.. but shop around, you might get it for 4k.

Will look around to see if I can find the FZ18 around R4k. Just another question: My wife likes the look of the FZ8, but I see that it doesn't use AA batteries. Is if easy to get spare batteries for the FZ8?

It comes with a charger, and rechargable battery. I bought to extra for my FZ20, they're not cheap, but I found I only ever need two... never ran out on weekends away.

I'm more of an Olympus fan, but the SP570uz is around R5500, if you want the Panasonic, you can find the FZ18 here for under 4K.

@furnic - That Olympus look great, but way more than our budget and my wife's needs. Thanx for the FZ18 link.

Just saw the Canon EOS Rebel K2 for under R3000. I know its an older SLR camera, but why so cheap. Is there something wrong with it?
Nothing wrong with it . . . . but I thought you wanted digital?

EDIT - if you're interested in a dSLR try shopping around for a Canon 350D - you should be able to pick one up fairly cheap as the 450D has recently been released.
