New Digital Camera

The Canon S5 IS a good option - probably one of the best Super Zoom P&S. Can be had for R4k.

Image stabilizing, 12x zoom, etc.

Just remember with a DSLR, you don't get video clips or viewfinding on the LCD... so unless you are a serious photographer, I'd skip a DSLR.

What about a Canon G9?
Excellent camera but it might be out of his desired price range.

Why bother with a camera - a cellphone like the N95 will do an adequate job.

I must say, you guys are tempting me to go up to R6000 :D Wife says she wants a dedicated camera and not a cellphone-camera. She had a "mik en druk" Kodak and now wants a decent camera. I got a 400D for Christmas from the family, so now she wants in on the action when we go out to take pictures.

If you get her the 350D then you can share (read buy more) lenses almost with impunity. :D

Good point, might try that angle on her tonight and see if she falls, I mean likes, the idea.

Just spoke to her: she said she "might" think about the 350D. I think she knows about the lens "sharing" plan
If not, I'm considering getting the Canon SX100 or S3 IS. They are around the same price, or go for the Canon S5 IS if the budget and CC allows it.

You've got to be joking! :D

Freakboy - I think you (or your wife) for need to decide what you want to use the camera for... you are comaring a wide range of cameras with different intended uses.

You can get the S5 IS for around R4000.IMO it is a very capable camera .

I've noticed that Incredible Connection has the EOS 400D(with 2Gb C/Flash memory card,Canon MP600 photo printer and some cd's) for R6999- but that might be stretching the budget:D

Yeah... if you can get the S5 for the same price as the Panasonic, I'd go for the S5... Canon pictures just seem better.

Someone once said: “It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission” :D I could always try to convince her, but I won't count on it.
