New Display Card?

The hd3000 and 4000 series support ATI converter ( meaning you can convert movies in 20mins ) with the new 8.12 drivers, but only the 4000 series support ATI stream.

in other words, if you can get the 4670 as it supports the new ATI stream technology, if you cant, get the 3850 as it atleast supports the new video converter technology from ATI :)

Also i have to say looking at the reviews I'm surprised to see how well the 9600gt outperforms the 4670. A new leadtek 9600 will cost 1400, I would consider that to be a better bet.

4670 supports ATI stream, i dont see how you can choose a 9600 over that....

But Nvidia already has CUDA, and we're only looking at gaming performance. What does video encoding have to do with anything?

Though you reminded me, I'm in the process of encoding a whole batch of movies for my mp3 player, I hadn't thought about using Stream...might give it a try when I get home.

ok, well, video encoding and what not could be useful to those with ipod's/psp's/and cellphones when you want to put full movies on them. the thing that ati has over nvidia is that with ati's massive number of processors, it takes less time to encode and what not... but it's also free :D.

the hd4670 also has more texture units then the hd38xx series of cards which is a big up with games to come :D. the hd 4670 is also cooler and doesn't require additional power, rather it just runs off the pci-e bus's power... that's why it is a little better then the 9600gt... also, for a few hundred more then a stock hd 4670, you can get one with an aftermarket cooler and such... these hd4670's are meant for casual gamers and media pc's... so they won't pull the best graphics, but they will run gamers for about 2-3 years with no problems...

have a look at the power consumption: link

so if your psu is kuk then this card will still run just fine :D

Yeah I'm going to try Stream out when I get home, I forgot that I had it tbh.

Remember guys that HD3870 from prophecy is the DDR3 version. It's not the same 3870 you see in most benchmarks, which is DDR4. The HD4670 also works on the 4 series core which is optimised for newer games, so you might well see it being faster than the HD3870 in the future. It also has lower power requirements and +- R250 cheaper.

So I'd really be looking at either a HD4670 or a 9600GT, but that would have to be second hand to fit your budget. Prophecy is closed for about a month still, so a 8800GT or 9600GT second hand might be better. They are both faster than the 4670 or 3870 DDR3.

Just tried out ATI Avivo for the first time. On one hand I'm amazed at the speed - encoded a full length hi-def movie in like 10 minutes. On the other hand it is too limited for my needs. I'm going to have to wait till they upgrade the package to be more inclusive.

but that's not bad for there 1st try hey... well lets just see if they improve it or not

Yeah it's a good start definitely.

Anyway dude - for your money my best bet is 9600GT new or 8800GT/3870 secondhand if you're serious about wanting to play games.

only thing that pisses me off about nvidia cards and why i will never recommend them to anyone is fullscreen video mirror.

nvidia no longer supports fullscreen video mirror, and ATI does. it is a very handy feature and i use it alot. since vista came out nvidia has disabled the feature permanently and that is when i went over to ATI.

from nvidia's website :
"Full screen video mirror.
This feature is no longer supported due to the new Protected Video Path Output Content Protection (PVP-OPM) in Windows Vista."

sorry, but the day nvidia got too lazy to re program their drivers to fix bugs that werent forseen is the day i become an ATI fan :p

But you keep talking about non-gaming applications that aren't directly relevant to the thread. I don't personally care about fullscreen video mirror and I'm pretty sure Loop doesn't either. My 8800GT ran great when I had it, and now my 4850 also works great, I really don't care about the ATI vs Nvidia thing.

Yeah the GT was a beast at it time, much like the 4850 now.

Think that XXX 256 88GT isnt too bad, go for it.

Dont buy any G80 cards though(GTS320 & GTS640)...definitely not worth it at those prices

when i go out and buy a vga card i dont just look at gaming performance, what happens when the op wants to convert movies ? or he desides he wants to hook the card up to his TV set and make use of the features ?

gaming performance is a major factor yes, but so are the rest of the features that you pay for. the card has a tv out for a reason and video converting is something that most people use from time to time. and ATI stream is a big deal no matter what anyone says, in the near future more and more apps will support it and i am sure alot of people who could have bought a 4000 series but bought a 3000 instead will regret not spending that extra bit.

Well, for converting movies as I just said, I tried ATI's toolset and it was severely lacking in functionality. Whereas SUPER or whatever other free apps do a great job, albeit a lot slower. So I'm not going to buy a 4xxxx card in the hope that ATI will someday fix up their application to the point that I can use it.

But I think once Avivo is up to scratch on the functionality side, it will be a killer app for ATI. I was shocked at how fast it is compared to the other video converters I use.

well it seems the speed aspect is what they were aiming for, but the over the new couple of months they will add more and more features :D

I have alot of options now to think about, Ive feel much more enlightend now. Dankie se.
