New DSTV HD Decoder

So if i am still on a SD singleview decoder and i plug in a baby HD decoder, then i'll be able to watch hd? I'd just need installation to give me an extra LNB so that i can record?

something like that YES
"extra LNB" meaning CHANGE TO DUAL LNB!

obvioulsy Multichoice is gonna tell you it's not possible

I can't find the HiFi corp ad online anywhere - their online specials PDF doesn't have it?

Update: I can also confrim the new decoder works of a single lnb. HD works, so does pausing live tv etc. Only recording different channels gives you a problem, if they are on different bands. In that case you have to reboot the decoder!

SAw the new 'Baby HD PVR's " at Makro this afternoon - R1999. (for those that don't like HiFi Corp)

PnP Hyper also have it. Same price R1999. Only Game and Dion haven't heard of it yet :D

Yeh, but I went and got one anyway from Hi-fi Corp...

turns out its the same shyte (tongue-in-cheek) you buy at Makro and Multi-Choice.....

anyways, got mine activated via telephone.....xtraview set up....onelnb into new baby HD decoder...everything works well....except the recording of course...

OK, got the new HD decoder at Makro for R2K this afternoon.

Hooked it up to the LNB using only one connection, turned on and called the MC call centre.

The operator didn't know that it existed and needed to look up some info, and 20 min later had the smartcard paired and the channels active.

Then the fun began - eventually they tracked down the right supervisor and confirmed that the Premium subscription includes the HD channels and the R65 activation fee is for PVR functions only, and is optional.

So R2,000 for HD PVR, no extra fees and no wiring changes and presto - 3 HD channels.

Picture quality is better on SD channels, HD is ok, but not spectacular. Minor audio lag, but the speedy interface makes up for it.

How on earth did you get around the access fee? From the decoder serial they should know its an HD decoder! Also using a single lnb but have to pay access fee, lucky you!

Is HD any better on the big R2999 decoders?
nah, they all the same. The UEC fonts & menus have a sharper feel to them but picture wise the same

You can choose to disable it, aside from recording you also wont be able to pause, FF, REW live TV, so I spose if you not recording the R65 is not really worth it

It's pretty clearly spelt out in the decoder literature and DSTv Website that the R65 is for PVR functionality. I just insisted that they confirm their own terms and apply them accordingly.

Don't give in, call them up and demand that they drop the fee. I've had a high quality VCR hooked up to my system for well over a decade, but I haven't used it to record anything for so long that the time doesn't even blink 00:00 anymore. The display battery has died.
I have no need of PVR and don't see the need to pay extra for it. As it stands I've got loads of DVDs/Blu-rays that I still need to catch up on.
