The energy regulator had that report and it mentioned the bad maintenance of the electricity network in Ekhuruleni.

They had that long power outtage in Bedfordview a few weeks ago, and then some substation broke in the last week causing widespread outtages and now apparently another substation exploded last night with a bright flash and loud bang.

No matter how much you name metros with "african names" and call airports OR Tambo, it doesnt make your network maintain itself...

Sad indeed.

Service delivery at an all time low.
Power stations not maintained.
eNATIS down again yesterday.
Government "ultimatum" on strike side stepped, and government does nothing.

Yup, a truly wonderful country we should all be proud to live in.

KZN uses 15% of the national power but is responsible for 40% of the national problems :o

Also we have already got streets lined up to be named after commie heros Castro and Che :p

Get use to it, its a sign of the times. This is Africa what do people expect? 24hour non un-interrupted power? Not going to happen in a third world country where the infrastructure is not being maintained.

If the reports are to be believed, its the maintenance that caused this problem.
Some troll with a hammer and no clue probably.

Off again last night I believe.

O well, tis the sign of the times.
Wonder where all the ANC supporters are the last few days - been VERY quiet from their camp ever since the release of that report where SA came last in service delivery.

This is all because of apartheid . Those racist whites had stopped maintaining the system for the last 13 years

I live in the bedfordview area - and getting pissed off with these power problems. 15 years - no problems whatsoever - then the last few years its all gone to sh*t. We pay such high taxes, and im really wondering where all that money goes to. I think the ekhuruleni officials are all just riding the gravy train and just helping themselves.

The stories you hear are ridiculous. Ive spoken to a guy that knows the teams that repair the electricity - and he says all they do is patch the thing up to get it to working condition - and then a month down the line it breaks again. Their "maintenance" consists of sitting on their ass - and waiting for something to break - then rushing quickly to try and fix it.

PS The water lately has been the same. Dunno bout you guys - but weve been getting alot of water cuts. Its so fun to have a bath 'african style' in the morning - a small skottel, a lappie, and some mineral water from the fridge.

govt is probably right now forming a sub commitee to debate the need for a full commitee to organise the commitee to commission a report on the situation, and in the end all parties to the original discussion will deny ever having had any discussions and that the report was "never given to them".

5 hurt in Kempton Park blast

Johannesburg - Five people were injured, two of them seriously, when a cable they were working on exploded in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg on Thursday morning, paramedics said.

One of the seriously injured people suffered second degree facial burns, while the other suffered burns on his eyes and right arm when the explosion happened at 09:30, Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said.

"They are serious but not critical. They were not put on life support. But the one with second degree burns will have a lot of work done on him."

The other three suffered superficial burn wounds on their hands, fingers and lower arms, he said.

They were all taken to the Tembisa hospital by ambulance.

Dollman said the five were either replacing a main cable "thick as a man's leg", or doing repairs on it when the explosion happened near a bank on Plein Street.

'It was really scary'

An Absa bank employee who preferred to remain anonymous said he was outside smoking when he heard a "loud bang".

"It was really scary... when we checked what it was, there was this man lying at our office entrance, his facial skin had peeled and bones on his hands were exposed."

The Ekurhuleni metro council could not immediately be reached for comment and police knew nothing about the incident.
