New encryption ransomware targets Linux servers

Linux server admins are the target of a new form of ransomware that encrypts a server’s files and then sells them the key to unlock them.

How does the virus get root? From what I am reading it looks like a root user has to run the malicious file to cause problems. If thats the case, then never #rm -rf / :D Cause you can run that as root and destroy systems.

This is not a linux virus and this is not a virus that targets just linux. As per the article it targets hosting (specifically magento hosting) on both windows and linux servers. Since there are way more linux servers than windows one, I guess I can see why the author would make a click bait headline like this one. There are thousands of similar applications and bots that do this already. Its been a problem for people who cant maintain their websites for a long time.

For other people reading this, dont worry, no need to get worried. Just make sure you dont run random files as root. But Im sure most of you know that already :)

#1 Misleading heading, this does not "Target" linux servers it "Targets" web servers running Magento Commerce sites
