New Ethernet switches for JINX

The switches will be deployed at JINX with a mix of 10/100/1000 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, allowing South African ISPs to peer at substantially higher speeds. This is an important step in ensuring that South Africa's Internet industry has the bandwidth it needs to support projected growth in demand for Internet services in the years to come.

Now I guess it is up to the ISPs to provide cheaper local hosting so we can all benefit from this because there will be more local content...
 
Unfortunately while this is a great thing, I don't see it lowering the cost of local hosting or bandwidth since the ISPs are still required to spend stupid amounts of money on rubbish Telscum links.

Good on JINX for upgrading their switches though, its good to see progress which will hopefully benefit us once we can liberate ourselves from Telscum
 
its like upgrading your CitiGolf to a Porsche, but the road speed limit remains the same...
 
Well the Catalyst switches are flippen expensive. I have some experience with them and find them really really awesome. Not sure that it will help them, but it may result in better packet throughput...

Yes - the switches donated by Cisco are to replace a switch that had to be loaned to JINX due to capacity problems.

There are now a number of ISPs that are connecting to JINX at 1Gbps and exchanging traffic at over 100Mbps.
 
is this country reduced to a charity? does everything have to be donated to us? Come on SA geez cant we atleast have some pride and buy our own stuff.

Well I am stoked that the stuff was donated. If it was not donated they would have to get the money from somewhere else. That would have meant charging the ISPs more. The ISPs would need to make that money back. They would have charged us more to do that. You would then complain about the price of bandwidth in South Africa...
