New Face ID chip will allow smaller notch on iPhone - Report

Apple's upcoming iPhones and iPads will likely have much smaller notches than their predecessors thanks to a greatly reduced Face ID chip.

This is according to a report from Digitimes, which stated that the company has decided to scale down the die size of its VCSEL chips used in 3D Face ID sensors by 40-50%.

The smaller chips will help Apple cut down on production costs of new devices set to be launched later in 2021.

Exactly. Android phones have a front facing camera, and that's it. iPhones have an array of sensors and projectors for facial recognition.

Apple's face ID system is pretty remarkable;

I suspect some tech they can hide more easily behind screen.. other things like camera nope. Also speaker likely moving into edge.

I prefer finger Id so the wait continues.

If you think everyone (or even a majority of iPhone users) prefer TouchID you obviously don’t frequent Apple oriented sites like MacRumors.

Nee fokket that **** is prehistoric and the fact my much more expensive MacBook still uses it annoys me every time I need to use it.

In the four or so years I’ve been on FaceID I only ever notice the notch once in a blue moon when some or other small time app doesn’t accommodate it specifically.

For day to day use it actually helps to focus your finger towards the drag down area for Control Centre.

A security key normally requires a physical touch as confirmation, TouchID has that covered. On a Mac you could be using it remotely as an example unlike an iPhone.

Apple doesn’t provide access to the hardware for FaceID as I’m aware, just providing access through a common API could lead to activating the IR camera as an example. Seen the issue on Windows, also iOS forces browsers to use WebKit.

Users might just cover the camera for ‘privacy’.

The only thing that Android phones don't have in that image from @bwana is the flood illuminator, dot projector, and infra cam.

All those other sensors are pretty standard on phones.

iPhones have an array of sensors and projectors for facial recognition.

Well devs need to access the camera, but iPhone is more locked down than a Mac.
Compare Chrome for example, webcam access would be available through a common API but unlike the iOS app it isn't forced to use WebKit so isolation is harder in making sure it's done right.

TouchID, your physical presence is on the sensor, you can't do that remotely. That's the 2nd step of the verification, with FaceID you normally need to press the power button for confirmation.
