Hey Guys,

I'm trying to decide whether to buy the new fire TV or to get the Roku 4? I do have Prime membership and Netflix membership. Will get Hulu later on.

Which one would you recommend? I do have the Amazon Echo so I was leaning towards the Fire TV as I saw you could control the Fire with the Echo which is pretty cool.
However, I like the Rokus function to search through all the apps and not just Prime like the Fire TV (Unless they changed that with the new Fire TV?)

Hope you can help,
Kevin

I have the Roku 3 (3 of them) and the interface is superb.
For me the real test is if the wife and kids all operate it with minimal support.
Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Plex are all excellent
There are also very good streaming apps.
There are ROku apps for most environments

Superb.

Bear in mind you cannot set the UNOTELLY DNS on the Roku (like you can with Apple) so you have to make the change on a router

The new Apple TV looks good but no Amazon

Hi,

Yes I saw that you have to set the DNS in the router. I did want to avoid doing that, but if the Roku is better than the Fire TV, I won't mind doing it.

Like always its all about what you want to use it for. I had a Roku and switched to the FTV due to sourround issue on Netflix, my system could not decode DD+. Apart from that I love the fact that you can use Kodi (XBMC) on it and stream through that from your PC as well as Internet.

My wife is able to use it.

You can set the DNS on the box so no need to set it on your router if you so not want to.

For me it is fun playing arround with the Android system and seeing what it can do.

Both of the systems are good, but as I said the DD+ was my reason for switching

@Somkey_sa Ok, surround sound will be needed as we are going to get a new sound system for the TV soon as our old one is broken. But we do use it for movies.

What is XBMC? All we want the device for is to play series and movies from Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu, that's it! I don't need any of the games or any of the other stuff it does. I have the Amazon Echo for Music and that sort of stuff.

What is DD+?

What is DD+?

Dolby Digital Plus is basically the upgrade to Dolby Digital and is only transmitted through HDMI and basically is higher quality with less bandwidth. It also supports 7.1 channels. Netflix on Roku either has stereo or DD+ when you stream video but as the Roku does not have optical/coax out, you aren't able to get a non-hdmi receiver to decode the DD+ (as DD+ is backwards compatible with DD).

O, ok! I see, thanks! Well I decided to go for the Fire TV. I still need to get a streaming device for the bedroom, so maybe I'll go for a Roku device. If I really like the Fire TV, then I'll go for the Fire Stick for the bedroom instead of a Roku device.

To expensive! Would love to have gotten it as I have a MSI Nvidia GTX 970 graphics card. But its just a bit over what I would like to spend on a streaming device.
