hi
has anyone here downloaded the new firmware for the netgear DG834GT?
its V1.02.04
 
I downloaded it last night but have not installed it yet ... will see if I can do it today.
 
actually been running for 40 hrs without a reboot signal strength at 90%

maybe they finaly got the software right,,,,,,,,
 
I loaded the new firmware with no problems so far. Only thing is that I get lowid's when trying to access Emule - have tried adding a custom Emule service for the ports but it doesn't seemed to have helped. But I guess that's another topic :)

Updated the ADSL driver to improve performance and interoperability.
Updated the firewall to address an issue where a forced PPP disconnect from the ISP could result in the router requiring user intervention to recover the connection.
Added a firewall configuration option to easily disable Instant Messaging ports which are open by default. To disable Instant Messaging ports go to the Firewall Rules page and check Close IM Ports.

All a pleasure. Now if I can only get the wireless network to work from XP. SP1. Router works fine as Access point to internet from my N95 but I cannot link to PC network. There is no detectable network or shared folders! Dang
 
I did this upgrade earlier today and it all seemed to be working just fine. But then I tried to logon to play World Of Warcraft, and no matter what i did I could not logon. Reloaded the old firmware and it all works like a dream again.

Interesting, I presume You did save your settings and restored again after the upgrade?

I upgraded the firmware and it works fine. However, when I log in on the router's admin page and go to "Wireless Settings" and change the Mode and Channel (from "Auto 108Mbps" channel "6" to "g only" channel "7") and then click on Apply at the bottom... I get an "Unknown Error" popup message. If I then go back to that Wireless Settings page it displays the new settings so it seems to have saved it successfully anyway. However, I then Reboot the router, and when I go back to the Wireless Settings page, it then displays the old "108Mbps / channel 6" settings again. So it didn't save it after all. So I can't change the Mode and Channel with this new firmware...

If anyone has this model DG834GT router with the new 1.02.09 firmware installed, can you please check if you go to that Wireless Settings page, change the Mode and Channel to something else, click on Apply and let me know if you get that "Unknown Error" as well? I want to determine whether this is a problem with the new firmware, or a router problem I had all along.
My current settings of Auto108Mbps / channel 6 works fine.. but I don't like the idea that I can't change it if I want to! :)

Update: Changed my WPA password and after that it suddenly accepted the changes I made to the Mode and Channel. Weird.

It runs. Interface gets slow sometimes (dunno why it fluctuates like this, because it isn't hanging) but the setting changes get implemented super quick now. This was a problem with previous updates and needs solving. :)

All in all it feels like a good update. Corporate folks would like the fact that it now bans IMs with one click in the firewall settings. Sick people block IMs... ;)

DG834gt- new custom firmware
The Netgear DG834GT is a fairly decent, basic router from a few years ago. It uses a well-respected Broadcom 6348 ADSL2+ chipset and can handle adsl2+ data rates.

For those with marginal adsl connections, or trying to eek the maximum speed one great capability was the ability to telnet in to the router & set what is known as the "target SNR". This basically governs the handshaking between the router and the DSLAM (the thing the other side of the adsl connection, in the exchange). The lower the targetSNR the higher the data rate, but also the higher the potential error rate.

So using the "adslctl" command a user could set this to a percentage of the original. For my, my target SNR was 6dB, yet this was sometimes a tad low and result in high error rates on the connection late in the evening (since SNR varies through the day). So I'd frequently telnet in and set it to a higher % - say 110 ~ 7dB

Well a guy called Bracco has now modified the dg834gt firmware (which is open sourced) to allow the user to set & store this value, and a few other things. WELL DONE! I've thought about this, but not got around to doing it.

III. Upgrade Instructions

Download image file 3.43 MB

Using a browser, login to the router (the default URL is http://192.168.0.1). The user name is admin, and the default password is password

Make a backup of current settings in case

Under Maintenance, click Backup Settings and browse save to directory folder

Under Maintenance, click Router Upgrade and browse to where downloaded image dg834gt_1_02_13.img is stored

In case of serious problems! How to debrick your DG834GT

if you have bricked your router for any reason, dont panic! you can recover it just by doing these steps:

1)download recovery utility from netgear's site ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/dg834_recovery_utility.zip
2)download the official 1.02.09 firmware from netgear's site ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/dg834gt_1_02_09.img
3)unzip the recovery utility and put the firmware in the same directory
4)unplug the power connector of your router. then push the reset button and keep it pushed while plugging the power connector
5)the router will start flashing 2 leds, one green one orange
6)launch the recovery utility, select the LAN card attached to the router, click next next and then upgrade. wait for it to finish (dont worry, it may seem stuck but it isnt)
7)when flashing is done your router should be back to normal.
