Should I buy one?
One of the surprises is the ride. It’s notably stiffer than even the sporty ST models, leading you to believe the car is going to be hard to live with, especially at present, when many of the UK’s road surfaces have been ravaged by an aggressive winter.
The near-perfect body control is there all right, but the car doesn’t crash into craters the way you think it’s going to. It seems to ride them, somehow. The ride is rarely composed – you need a billiard table for that – but neither is it uncomfortable. It merely reminds you, every mile, that you’re riding in a very special car.
This is a compelling performance hatch made even better. The Race Red Edition is more usable, enjoyable and rewarding than ever.

Should I buy one?

You can no longer buy a new Ford Focus RS in South Africa
The Ford Focus RS has disappeared from the Blue Oval brand’s local website, marking the end of the all-wheel-drive hot hatch’s run in South Africa.
The news comes after Ford reportedly ended production of the RS-badged Focus in Germany back in April.
Interestingly, though, the outgoing Focus ST is still listed on the brand’s local website.
Of course, the Focus nameplate has since moved on to a new generation in many markets, with the cooking models (one of which we’ve already sampled in France) expected to touch down in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019.
Ford is also in the process of developing new versions of both the ST and RS based on this latest generation Focus, although neither has yet been revealed. But with Ford Motor Company of SA in July 2018 confirming the new Fiesta ST is not destined for local shores, the local availability of these upcoming hot hatches has yet to be established.
The Focus RS last appeared on Ford SA’s official price catalogue in October 2018, when it was listed at R712 900. In January 2018, Ford recalled the hot hatch for potential head gasket issues.
For the record, the Focus RS employs a turbocharged 2,3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine sending 257 kW and 440 N.m (with 470 N.m available on overboost) to all four corners via a six-speed manual transmission. The result? A claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 4,7 seconds and a top speed of 266 km/h.

At some point or another, the vapers of America collectively decided that, in addition to hoarding Subaru WRXs, a Ford Focus RS would also be a suitable car to blow vape clouds out of. Prestman Auto, a clearly brilliant dealership in Salt Lake City, Utah, recognizes this fact. Having a used Focus RS for sale on the lot isn’t that unusual. But Prestman’s offer is. On the car’s listing, the dealer advertises a free vape with the car’s purchase.
After laughing hysterically, I messaged the dealer just to confirm.
“Yes, there is a vape included in the purchase of the RS. We have a vape store next to our dealership that the buyer can go to and pick out a vape,” a dealership rep wrote. “We did that because most of the potential buyers for that car come with ‘vape in hand.’”

Mountune has taken the Ford Focus RS to a whole new performance level with two new packages - the more powerful of them boosting the hot hatchback’s output to 513bhp.
The new packages sit at the pinnacle of the long-established Ford tuner’s line-up for the Focus RS, with an extensive list of modifications including the removal of the 2.3-litre Ecoboost unit’s existing turbocharger in favour of “specifically engineered” BorgWarner items.
In the lesser-powered ‘M450’ package - priced from £2950 - the new turbocharger allows an increase of 49bhp over the previous M400 package - up to 444bhp, with 428lb ft of torque. Both figures are considerably more than the recently released (and much more expensive) Mercedes-AMG A45.
As well as the new turbo, Mountune introduces a high-flow sports catalytic converter and exhaust downpipe alongside other ancillary upgrades to be fitted at Mountune’s Brentwood HQ, or available to order online soon.
But that’s just the start; the M520 package uses a more advanced BorgWarner ‘EFR 7163’ turbocharger, alongside an uprated fuel pump, camshafts and valve train. A recalibrated ECU allows this package to take the 2.3-litre engine to 513bhp and 516lb ft.

Remember the rumoured high-performance Ford Focus RS500 (which, sadly, never reached production)? Well, the folks at UK-based firm Mountune have revealed their RS-based hyper hatch, dubbed the m520.
For the record, the standard model's 2,3-litre EcoBoost mill, churning out 257 kW and 440 N.m of torque (the latter from a low 1 600 r/min.), does not lack in power.
But the tuner thought the hot hatch could do with some extra grunt and tweaked the turbocharged four-pot to produce a whopping 382 kW and 700 N.m of torque, sent to all four corners via a six-speed manual gearbox.
According to the Brentwood-based firm, the increase in output has been achieved by fitting an in-house-configured BorgWarner EFR-7163 turbocharger, recalibrating the ECU, adding an uprated fuel pump and fitting revised camshafts and valve train.

Mountune in the United States now reckons it has created the highest output direct-injection four-cylinder known to man off using Ford’s 2.3-litre EcoBoost.
The motor was tested in a jig and the peak output was a whopping 684 hp (510 kW). That is 334 hp (250 kW) more than the standard offering and 186 hp (139 kW) more than their already strong m520 pack. A new head and larger turbo were primarily used to achieve this.

It seems the ever-increasing pressures on CO2 emissions in Europe are taking their toll with the engineering department involved in the development of the next Ford Focus RS struggling to reconcile the numbers.
According to information obtained from an unnamed senior Ford Executive, Autocar reports that creating a new Focus RS that adheres to the strict new CO2 regulations is not easy. 18 months ago, the brand believed that a 48V mild-hybrid system could be a plausible solution, though it’s now seems the hot hatch could adopt a full hybrid powertrain.
