I would like to introduce gaming to my son (6) as he seems to have an interest in starting to play games. We have a Wii but he is not that interested in those. I want to start him with perhaps some driving games.
What recommendations does anyone have to get someone starting out to get. BTW I also need to start getting my husband into gaming so he can do the teaching he likes 1st person shooters what starter or easy ones does anyone recommend.

Get your husband Uncharted. Start with the first one.

Get Rayman: Origins to co-op with your son or your husband. Best platformer this generation.

The first Resistance is also a good game to get your husband hooked on as you can co-op with him.

I think co-op will probably be the best to get both people enjoying the games with you. Once they finish those games you can give them single player experiences.

Yep I agree get games you can lan it just makes it so much more intersting for the players (especially new players). Even maybe look at doing need for speed type games.

I also have to ask what Wii games have you tried? The proper games like Metroid Trilogy and Mario Galaxy or the sea of shovelware?

Get your son outside and let him be a child :p
That is just it we cannot get him to watch TV and chill as he spends his days outside watering the garden and playing as we have a big garden. I now need to get him to understand that he needs to sit at a desk and concentrate so wanted to make it a playful activity, hence the gaming option. It should also be good for his hand eye co-ordination. But am in total agreement let them play, but he is a child who gets a lot of that and at his age has never played any computer games even though he has had a pc since he was 2. He uses it to play his music as he loves music.

Thanks for all the responses and great suggestions. I will look into them this evening.

Love the idea of LAN games as we have a playroom/office with 3 PC's and great LAN. So I could teach them and it become something we do together. He tried a driving game and quite liked that. I come from a Command and Conquer era and still love that so may look at teaching my husband that.

I failed to mention that my child is high functioning Autistic "little Genius" and has ASPERGER'S Syndrome so he obsesses on a very small window of interests, currently the sprinkler system layout and maintenance in the garden, so this will also be an attempt to broaden his interests and get him into reading and taking instructions.

Minecraft! It's like digital Lego.

Your son sounds like such a chilled cool vibed kid :)

I agree with the others LAN will be the best, Man I wish my parents played games with me when I was that age :O Anyway Hope you find a cool game to enjoy with your son and husband :)

+1 for Rayman everyone should play it.

Just don't get him any MMO's... they are the zol of the gaming world.

Perhaps get Starcraft2... for husband and son.

hmmm, I really think your efforts to control him using games will not pay off too well. Some kids love gaming, some kids don't?

But remember, this maybe a curse later on, when he has homework

Ok, Starcraft for a 6 year old might be a push. :)

I'd recommend games with bright colours and simple controls. Oddly, Viva Pinata would fit this bill.

Racing games would also suit your child, they demand concentration, but are exciting enough to hold attention too. Maybe start simple with Need for Speed series etc.

What you'd want to avoid is placing stress on the child to enjoy your interests. By this I mean, don't assume he is even interested in becoming a gamer, but expose him to a wide range of game genres and let him pick his favourite.

For lan activities, which may well be interpreted as "I must play this with mom and dad or they'll be sad", might I suggest family games that can be enjoyed together (a lan without the name), Mario Kart, Family Games Night, Monopoly (might be a tad demanding) etc.

If console pc/games aren't his thing, consider tabletop games. Magic the Gathering might be a fun son/dad activity (when he gets a bit older).

best to start him off on modern warfare 3, the kids love it.... later on get him battlefield 3 :D

If your PC is good enough you can use emulators to play games like Rayman (N64 version). There's MAME, N64, SNES, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2 consoles etc to emulate.

Yeah, but that's almost piracy. Steam has a good catalogue of those old games anyway. No need to use emulators.

My son started playing pc games when he was 4 years old, is now 6, they like car games (with game pad) or fps games but most of the fps games are rated 16 , lot of blodd, killing, swearing etc that is not good for them, its cool to see your kid play well ( he will sure kick some teen butt) but also sad to see their lives are now only about games, they eat, drink, sleep games, games games, I recommend a good educational game that will help him not only in school but also to develop him as a child... That was my personal opinion..
