Hey Guys,

I'm in the market for a new gaming laptop. I have a budget of R18k-R23k, I'm hoping to get a good gaming laptop
in that range.

Can anyone recommend any reputable stores or online stores where I can purchase such a laptop? You google and get many
options, but you never know which ones are good or bad.

Hence I'm turning to you guys for guidance based on your own experiences with purchasing hardware.

The best bang for buck laptop at the moment IMO is this puppy. I nearly bought one, but going from a 17" to a 15.4" really irks me, so I aborted. Unfortunately, it is out of stock. But spec'd up, it should hit just under 23k unless they get more stock and it's more expensive. It's a real banger of a gaming laptop. Those Tongfang rebrands are pretty much the best cooled and most powerful AMD laptops you can buy. The alternative at the moment is the Asus TUF A15, but the reviews and shortcuts Asus have taken have left a sour taste in my mouth.

Wootware is reputable. There is also Flashgear on this forum who is legit, so it might be worth your while to PM him and ask what he's got.

Agreed and even if you find a good special which is slightly more than the desktop version you are limited with upgrades

What are you smoking? My Asus RoG G75VX outperformed my previous company's Dell notebook and it had half the RAM (8GB vs. 16GB) and an Intel i7 that was 4 years older than the i7 I had.
Not sure you know what you're talking about, unless you're referring to the battery. Then yes, only then does it underwhelm.
 
I'd completely agree with @HavocXphere. Had my Asus RoG G75VX for years now and it's rock-solid (literally!) and very quick. I suppose I could have upgraded to 16GB RAM from the 8GB in it, but the GTX675MX in it played (and still does!) everything I needed it too.
If only I could replace it...

Do you have a gaming laptop? And how can you make a dumb statement like they perform worse than a desktop? Sure, you can't pop in 4 HDDs but they can be upgraded to a high capacity of RAM, their CPUs are the same as desktops, most if not all either had hybrid HDDs or SSDs and a HDD.
So, pretty dumb statement.

Yes, four in fact (GTX960M, GTX 1060, GTX 1060, RTX 2060), and two desktops (GTX 1060, GTX 1660 Super). There are more desktops in the house, but not mine (laptop 1 was my old one, 2 and 3 I got for parents, 4 is my current, desktop 1 is my old machine I upgraded, desktop 2 is my gaming when home).

And yes, they perform worse than a desktop, you have less airflow due to tighter space, you have a lower power envelope, the equivalent GPU is always a cut-down version, it costs more and it's harder to upgrade.
Another factor is you can never tell the actual CPU or GPU performance beforehand based on the actual CPU or GPU, as the manufacturer can just adjust it however they like (just look at the RTX 2070/80's in laptops).

You compared your laptop to a notebook, that's not a desktop.
 
Then you bought the wrong make or your setup isn't correct. I've never had an airflow issue with my Asus. I've never had it overheat. Never. I compared a notebook as I haven't had a PC in donkey's years. There was reasoning behind that.

You clearly dont know much about hardware.
Let me break it down for you:
1. GFX performance is not like for like when it comes to mobile versions and desktop versions. They may have the same or similar version numbers, but performance wise they are worlds apart.
2. Cooling, yup laptops dont cool nearly as well as desktops due to smaller heatsinks and more limited airflow. Gaming laptops in particular will thermal throttle the speeds down, this happens to all of them.


There are other reasons too but those are enough.

Why would my laptop overheat? It's designed to operate in those constraints.

That's my last reply on the matter, haven't met somebody that dense about a topic in a long while.

I do, but I tend to keep my hardware knowledge to servers and storage.

Lol fair enough, to be honest Im exactly in the same boat these days. I work in enterprise IT in the cloud space so I hardly even know desktop hardware these days.
The only reason Im so confident in my claim about performance is that I tried to choose between a gaming laptop and gaming desktop about 2.5 years back.
I did tons of research and came to that conclusion, I also had a friend who bought one around that time and was really disappointed in the performance.
