New! Gmail app for mobiles

Can anyone explain what the benefit of this app is?
I have a Nokia N80 and can connect directly to my Gmail account via by inbox, without any third party apps:
pop.gmail.com
smtp.gmail.com

Dont forget: Security Port must be StartTLS or SSL/TLS

Depends how you use your Gmail account I suppose, I download my emails via pop access onto my pc so I wouldn't want to download them onto my phone as well or it wouldn't all be synchronised.
 
Not working on my D500, just says "Loading..." in the inbox, doesnt get past that :( I'm on CellC

When I tried (from my phone) it installed okay. but when I tried to run it it said gave me some data network error. I do have a gmail account (:)), and can otherwise access data.

I did read something the other day on a south african blog about the service only being available in the US + Canada, but I can't find a link for that now.

edit: okay. its also being discussed in the Vodacom forum, where I see lots of people seem to have it working.

I also had a network error but it went away after I changed my settings of the language in my gmail account to English US.

One of my friends also had problems and is using http://www.flurry.com although personally I think it is a bit slow to send an e-mail.

Check your language settings - hope it works.

Did you ever come right with your Samsung D820? I loaded Gmail onto my D820 today and it also switches off when I try connect onto Gmail via Java. Then when it switches on it goes through a repeat cycle of rebooting till I manually switch it off and on. :(

This is not a problem on mobile phones. I use the N80 to check my gmail account and my normal pop3 email address. The mobile phone logs in, then downloads headers. I can then open specific mail messages by downloading them. Mobile phone software is made to leave the messages on the server. So when you get back to the office, you can use Outlook to download the messages you have already read - they will still be there.

Hi, I'm also using N73, I downloaded the gmail.app using Services on my phone and installs ok.

However, when Loading, This is the error message: Network Unavailable - Contact your carrier, or visit the Gmail Mobile FAQ on your computer for more info.

I am able to surf fine using the Opera Mini, and downloading the app using services is ok, and using POP3 to check emails from Messages is ok as well…so it’s not the problem with my packet data.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Have you set the permissions to allow net access for the app?
 
pls help me is phone browsing is better or java. I'v K700i.
what is applications certificate problems when using gmail.

Yeah, I had no luck with my k700i. I remember there were some complicated way of getting certificates for the phone, but I could never get gmail to work - not the hava app or through the built in pop3 client.

http://www.mobileoss.org/p/mgtalk.html also does not work, but their new version 3 looks interesting, it includes libjingle support.

But give http://www.gotalkmobile.com/ a try. It's an IM app, but you can minimize it and receive notifications when new email arrives.
