New GP number plates approved

Ill change the plate wont use pop rivets though, Ill use double sided tape, they steal it then they steal it will be my fault!

Is this the pop rivet idea?
I wonder what "pop rivet" came up with the idea and how many shares he/she has in a pop rivet manufacturing company?

Gauteng seems to go through number plate ideas like the rest of us go through toilet paper.

From our local knock & drop :

The permanent fixing of number plates will play a significant role in combating vehicle crime, simultaneously bringing South Africa into line with other countries where similar laws are enforced.

A law requiring us to paint our balls red and sell ourselves as christmas tree decorations would also bring us in line with other countries where similar laws are enforced.

What dumb dipsh!t thinks up these inane comments?

What completely dumb and idiotic dipsh!t *believes* it?

The mind boggles.

Koos, still driving on CY plates.

The government r genius's!!
Criminals will never want to steal/hijack cars if the license plate is pop-riveted on.................!!

Or............ maybe the criminals will put a fake license plate on with double-sided tape until they reach the chop-shop!

So if we need to pop-rivet our plates on... maybe they should ban double-sided tape too while they're at it

Its such a joke...there are so many other things that they can focus their attention on....but Nooooo...we have a major problem with the fscking plates in this country....

You okes are missing the point. The pop-rivet has two purposes:
1) Kill that excuse about the number plates that mysteriously fell of.
2) To make the slide-in number plates illegal. At the moment one goes to a parking space, finds a slide-in number plate, slides it out and one has a free illegal number plate. If it's riveted on, one would at least need rudimentary tools.

So how much is this going to cost you all?
If I recall correctly, it's not gonna cost extra, at least not directly. I believe it's being incorporated into the regional budget.

It will make it (slightly) more difficult to obtain plates registered to someone else. They are still gonna steal your BMW...

This government of ours has yet to come to grips with simple technical concepts. That's all I can say at this point.

I thought they were also going to add RFID chips inside the plates... so they can read them as you drive past

If criminals cant slide off plates and steal them... then they will just make there own.
It really isnt an inconvinience for a robber stealing a R500k car. They will just have a connection make fake plates as there are many private places that print/make license plates... and then use double-sided tape to stick over the pop-riveted plate.
Anyway... we dont even have enough police presence anyway to check license plates on the road. I see so many cars with no license plates now-days, and rarely would ever see 1 getting stopped.
