New GP numberplates from April

Basic facts:
- Will cost around R400
- Be renewed every 5 years
- Start for B starting numberplates and then move down the alphabet every month a new letter (thus take 26 months to do all cars)
- standard numberplates have blue text blue, personalised is green and red is for govment
- Have a RFID chip and also some kind of sticker in the back window with the car details.
- Plates will be made of aluminium

I see no mention of the requirement about having the plates poprivited into the plate holder that was talked about moths ago, has that been dropped? (it would sad if it was)
 
They had same guy on the radio on this the other day. He said theres no such thing as riviting ur plates. They will be fastened the same way it has always been.
 
I've already seen the rivited.

Maybe a different project?
 
Looking to buy a car soon, will i have to redo plates in April?? Would suck :(

BULLSHlT. They can shove that plan somewhere. They announced that it won't cost the motorists extra.

I bought a car recently and have been given the rivet type plates. The plates just rivet onto the holder. The holder is screwed into the car. (but once the plate is rivetted on over the screws you can't unscrew). Gonna stick it on with velcro until the guavamint make up their minds.

These idiots in government will keep changing plates simply because it suits them and their BEE partners who are all involved in the numberplate racket!! :mad:

Britain has a brilliant system that doesn't have to be fiddled with every so many years, but will we look at that system? Of course not...we have to continue to re-invent the bloody wheel, and as long as it means the motorist will have to cough up all the better! :sick: :mad:

P.S. The clever twit who brought in the riveted numberplate has obviously never removed a pop rivet with an electric drill....AAAARRRGGHH!!! :rolleyes:

in the freestate some dude got the contract to supply all the plates[blank] and he invented the 5 years sticker.

Some idiots do replace their number plates when sticker says.

Guys, the reason the GP are out soon is because a lot of people from other provinces buy cars in Gauteng and change the plates into those of their provinces. I trully believe that about 50% of GP plates do not exist anymore. If this continues, the new plates will be exhausted within the next 5 years.
 
So 45697600 possible combinations for the new plates VS. 17576000 for the old plates (excluding any reserved combinations).

What IDIOT came up with this system, it's probably so they can phase this system out again soon to make more money.

I wonder how much these people get paid for "research" into new plates because honestly, I could do a better job in 5 minutes.

I think I'll just get myself some plates from another province, honestly I don't give a sh#t if my car says GP, MP, CA, ND or whatever else.

Hmm, sounds like a stupid system for 2 reasons:

1) Considering our traffic department at current, what are the chances of you getting issued a plate that has already been issued OR when the time comes to renew that you get a plate that is still fitted to another car (who decided not to reissue).

2) Vehicle identification has to rely solely on VIN now because number plates can change, even if a history is kept you'd still need to access to that history and hope that it isn't changed and is well maintained.

Without sounding like a dripping tap, may I repeat what I said in the first place. These idiots are all trying to re-invent the wheel at the cost of the motorist.

There is absolutely no need to keep "re-inventing" GP or any other province's number-plates. We are literally millions of cars behind the European system but they don't have to be re-invented in order to see that the "brother in law" has a decent pension!

I love the UK system...example MINI Cooper bought May 3rd 2006 = AB 06 XYZ...AB..totally random...06...bought between April and November 2006 ...XYZ...random again. After September 2006 it changes to 56 in the middle and you can use the same letters all over again...i.e. April to September = 06, and October to March the following year = 56...you can scramble the other letters as much as you like and it literally gives you millions of combinations. Obviously 2007 cars had 07 then 57 in the middle of their letters...easy peasy. :rolleyes:

Nice thing is that the number stays with the car, no matter how many owners or where they live...

Sooooo..you don't have to worry about reaching ZZZ 999 GP and running out of plates...it just won't happen.

But of course, the Cretins in charge of all of this are far too concerned with feathering their own nests, rather than finding a system that works for everyone. :mad:
 
How many cars are there in GP?

In 2001 there were roughly 7m vehicles in SA.. lets be generous and give that a 5% growth PA meaning there are approximately 11m vehicles on SA's roads now.

The GP plate system allows for 19.6m different plates.

Let's be generous and say GP has half of the vehicles in SA atm. Then there should be NO reason to introduce a new system yet. If they've run out of numbers already then they need to recycle old ones (they should know which ones are current and which aren't)

Recycling plates makes perfect sense, but then there would be no new jobs for the "mates"!
 
Yeah clearly..

KZN and the WC seem to be able to recycle plates quite easily though, wonder how long before thats done away with.
 
Interesting scheme. If I get my timing just right and apply during the correct *period* I hope to get my wife's changed to BL 33 DS GP
