Apologies if this is old, but I just received an explanation from my (dialup) ISP regarding the new ADSL capping system in place from 1 November. I assume the implementation will vary depending on the ISP, but this is what one ISP intends doing:

---

Our existing 3 GB accounts will have an new “grace cap” mechanism. When a user reaches his cap the following restrictions will apply:
– The speed of the connections will be significantly reduced, for both international and local traffic.
– The grace cap will remain in place for a period up until the end of the next working day.
– Data uploaded or downloaded under the grace cap will be limited to 300 MB.
– When either the time limit or the data limit are reached the account will be disabled until the end of the calendar month.

During the grace cap period the limited service is provided to enable customers perform essential work.

---

Just another good reason to NOT get ADSL...

Yes, a lot of ISPs will do this, because they can't disable accounts immediately. Which ISP is it, by the way?

Which ISP is that.

I have accounts with,

Telkomsa, Mweb, Tiscaly and WebAfrica and have not recieved notice from any of them yet. The end of the month looks like a good time to consolidate all of them, and it looks like IS is going to be the best choice so far. Web Africa is good but I still have no idea of the future priceing...

Any sugestions?

If you looked at all the notices been sent out. ISP`s will be able to limit your account after you hit your cap to whatever speed they wish basically to set.

Assuming they do their own radius authentication. Which brings other disadvantages, namely that they will be therefore paying R60 odd per gigabyte.

I predict a lot of ISPs will go this route and multiplex GBs, eg, they will sell 10gb accounts for low prices, betting that not eveyone will use their entire 10gb. Whether this is sustainable we'll have to see, but I doubt it...

it's really depressing. we are going back into the stone age in terms of broadband!

Hey personally I think this grace-cap thing is pretty clever.. not so much for the consumer but I think this is great in the way that the ISPs won't get totally screwed over now.

So do u think there will be any uncapped solutions after 1Nov? or are they all going to fall away or cost tonnes?

We have an uncapped solution available from November, information in my sig and new website before november will have all neccesary information.

This will be aimed mostly at business users tho but open to anyone none the less, that requires this.

sgs, your ISP is either going to use the new 16K or 64K throttle options from Telkom.

Do you know which one?

Dunno - there was no mention of that fact. I assume the 64k one as one cannot download 300MB in 1 day at 16Kbps :-)
