R9 290 is much faster than a 770. It's between a 780 and a Titan; occasionally faster than Titan but not generally. Check out the Anand review. It's pretty much the one to get right now.

To better future proof. Buy a card for R3k take the other R3k put into a savings account, get some interest on it, and buy a card in another 2 years. You are not going to get major difference in performance between a R3k card and a R6k if you know what to buy, and you can buy a new card In 2 or 3 years, that will blow your R6k card out the water for half the price.

A 3K card however, will not run games like BF4 on ultra and future games to come.

The issue is not with ultra but rather with the oversampling slider.
Once you begin oversampling to 150% it really slows down.

Otherwise it does run quite well at about 120% oversampling.

Ignore everything said in this ^. In 3 years a card will be better yes... And 3 years from then will be an even better card... And 3 years from then will be an even better card.... And 3 years from then will be an even better card.... And 3 years from then will be an even better card.... And 3 years from then will be an even better card... And 3 years from then will be an even better card...

Just buy a R6k card now and buy a new one in 4 years time.

I think you didn't understand his post.

Why spend 6K over 4 years, when you can spend that same 6k over 6years and get better performance?

The performance of 3K cards now can still max out games at HD resolutions.

Spending 3K every 3years is better than spending 6k every 4years. Cheaper and you get better performance.

If you have the 6k for the card then why would you even bother saving?
You'll just have another 6k in that same time.

As you so elegantly point out with your copy pasting, there's always something new coming out. What if DX12 comes out this year? That's why upgrading more frequently better. No point spending a lot on something that will get outdated tomorrow.

Well then he could use the cash to go on holiday or something. i don't know. :p

What resolution are you trying to run?

I'm considering an R9 290 because the R9 280X is just a little too underpowered for 1920*1200 in eyefinity (3 monitors).

1920x1080 single monitor

Ok, been looking at reviews. Seems the R9 280X will suit me better. I guess the 290 will be overkill for 1920x1080? Eliminating future proofing makes me a sad panda.

The requirements of games increase with the technology. If he wants what R6k worth of performance is going to get him now, spending 3k in 2-3 years is still not going to be satisfactory at that point. A 3k card for me is okay but maybe he's running on 2560; advising him to get a 270x is going to cripple his performance now. Rather silly point to make.

Edit just saw the last post:

if you want to future proof then surely the 290 would be a safer bet?

Ok, all I want is simply something uber powerful that I won't have to upgrade anytime soon and still run games on ultra 1080p.
