Hey guys, I need some help...

I bought and installed an I5 2500 and an Asus P8H61-MLE/USB3 on Saturday into my existing system, the rest of which consists of 1x2gb ddr3 1333, 1x4gb ddr3 1333, GT9600 and a few hdd's.

My problem is that it restarts as soon as Windows 7 (64 bit) starts loading (when that swirly thing starts).
It gives me the option to start Windows normally, or to run start up repair, but start up repair doesn't help at all, and starting it normally just results in it restarting as soon as Windows starts loading again.

I have 2 old hdd's which also has windows 7 (64 bit) on them and both of them also had the same problem when I plugged them in, so I'm confident it's not the OS.
I've unplugged each ram module individually to see if it was one of them, but that also didn't help, as well as when I unplugged the graphics card.
I've also unplugged the DVD drive and the other hard drives and even the damn chassis fan.

I've even kept it unplugged and untouched for a day to prevent myself from smashing it.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can try before I pay someone to fix it?
Could the motherboard or processor be a dud?

MB earthed right?
Also I recall something I did in bios previous asus mb I had with same problem. Just can't remember what though.
Set bios to defualt and try.

Did you change motherboards? Chances are the drivers/device names for your drives have changed. Good luck with that

Try disconnecting all drives, and only connect a clean formatted hdd and then install windows on there like if you were building a brand new system. Also check the bios for the boot sequence and maybe clear everything except for the one hardrive.

Is your psu okay? Was it working fine before the upgrade? All power connectors properly inserted etc. I know it sounds dumb but people often don't hook up all their power cables properly and as soon as the system reaches a certain point during bootup it will crash and restart if not receiving sufficient power.

Yeah, I replaced the motherboard and the CPU because my old motherboard crapped out and was a 775, so figured I might as well upgrade. Haven't managed to get into Windows once.

I've had a look around the bios but can't see anything that looks like it might help. Tried changing the boot sequence but yeah, obviously that didn't help...

I think you're gonna have to reinstall. Windows doesn't know where to find itself once it loads the drivers for your mobo.

I remember the one time I got a new mobo and experienced the same problem... put my old mobo in, made a back up of what I needed. Put my new mobo in and reinstalled windows. Like above said, ur PC is a bit lost with the new hardware.

Yeah the PSU is fine, the reason for replacing the old mobo is the USB ports and sound wasn't working anymore, and I've been itching for an upgrade...
I've double and triple checked all the connections. I'll go check again though just in case.
I've tried installing a fresh copy of Windows but it just gets stuck on loading, or not stuck but it says its loading for hours. Tried installing from DVD and a bootable flash drive and both have the same result.

I would 1st set the SATA controller mode mode in BIOS to the opposite of what it is at the moment.

If it is set to AHCI set it to IDE or visa versa, save and exit BIOS... then see if it boots.

I had the same problems with Windows 7 and different motherboard migrations... changing the controller mode then removing the old chipset drivers and installing the new fixed the reboots, and then I could change the mode back into AHCI and Windows 7 was happy again.

Windows 7 is meant to be more tolerant than XP of this, but I have experienced similar reboot behaviour with upgrades.

Perhaps this is the same ?

EDIT: Ah... I see, you have tried a re-install too... was this a format and install ?

If you dunno if windows if even on there try starting in safe mode? F8

Ok so I've managed to get it to start installing a fresh copy of Windows from the flash drive.
I slipped the mobo's driver disk into the DVDrom and for some reason it worked.
Really confused about it but very happy it's at least installing Windows!

Thanks for everyone's input!
Hopefully it's sorted now

Good show.

Maybe if you feel like experimenting with one of your old drives after your install... disconnect the current one, connect one with the old Windows 7 install... in the BIOS goto Advanced->SATA Configuration->SATA Mode and change it to from IDE to SATA or if it is SATA to IDE, save and see if it gets further than before with the windows load.

I am curious to see what the old issue might have been...
