New Highways

what we really need in joburg/cape town is new york's and london's subway rail systems. sure, the highways will sort us out right now, but for how long? with no safe, decent and reliable public transport, people will carry on buying cars and using them, and in no time at all that extra lane on the highway will be gone

Twice now when changing lanes with my indicators on and enough space I almost hit someone because they just blatantly ignore you and accelerate when they see you trying to change lanes. And they don't accelerate slowly mind you, they had to be flooring it... These days I try to avoid the N1 at all costs...

Good point, this is a verrry good point.
I did find that changing lanes without pre-warning would prevent this crappy behavior.
But then again, I only got that crappy behavior when I was in the wrong lane too close to the turnoff, where I would end up pushing into an existing queue.

I think a lot of beemer owners didn't get the memo, about their indicators being broken... they should go their local bmw dealer asap to get it looked at and probably fixed...

Checked and email today with highspeed trains almost knocking track jumpers and a whole conversation shot up at work.

one would think with the amount of travel south africans and even more so tourists do that they would look into
getting highspeed trains between the major city`s, Cape town,JHB,Durban.
I still think the goverment needs to relook rail transport in a serious way.

Oh BTW the new 4th lane is for the Rapid bus system not for normal cars, I saw this on Special assignment on Tuesday. They showed the new lane being blocked off and only being used buy the BRT buses. They showed this happening on Empire as well.

well, the other day i was merrily on my way to work, traffic was a bit congested, ambulance needed to get through, no emergency lane, and it was doing so very easily. everyone in the middle lane just moved over to the left/right so it could get past. it was quite a beautiful sight.

Yeah it's a wonderful thing to see people moving out of the way for an ambulance. They're not as willing for police cars though.

Now that pisses me off big time. Try to get out of the city on the N3 at peak hour in the afternoon. The taxis will pass all the cars in the queue and push in at the front only to congest the 2 right hand lanes. GRRRRRRRRRR

We have this "red" lane here in Durban for a few months now. A total flop. Buses and Taxi's use the normal lanes in any case. This "red" lane actually causes more traffic as there are now one lane less to use. This lane is 90% of the time empty.

Not so sure about that, the bus lane on empire has been around for as long as i can remember.
