Theyve changed the highways from 3 lanes to 4 lanes. No more emergency lanes....
So what happens in an emergency? In an accident if the paramedics cant make it on the scene on time, the injured people can die...
The ambulance, firetrucks, tow trucks, vultures and police cant get thorugh the traffic, the cars cant move out the way on a tightly squeezed 4 lane highway...

Poor planning... good luck to all road users.

And now? What are the taxis going to do without their dedicated lanes?

Yeah, I was just going to say there were so many taxis using the emergency lane I don't think it makes much of a difference. Now they just use the small patch of sand next to it... lol...

Also broken down cars ...

The last few days on the N1 there has been a broken down car stuck in the slow lan because there's no where to pull off anymore.

I guess the solution would be to stop buying Toyotas.

What I found quite amusing is how narrow they've now made the lanes. Trucks practically touch both lines and with South Africans' inability to stay in their lane while taking a bend all manner of chaos ensues.

I think it's an awesome low-cost immediate effect good idea.
During peak traffic, traffic moves at 70km/h anyways, and offpeak, people can stay away from each other across 4 lanes easily enough.

I noticed that aswell... another thing, drivers are drifting when changing lanes, the lane changing especially to the middle lane is quite a challenge to some.

And .. lets not forget that this tactic completely obliterates the yellow-lane abusers, and makes life quite damn difficult for the blue-light brigade.

If it's changing lanes we're talking about...I can't stand it when drivers change a lane without indicating! Indicators are there for a reason! I have had to narrowly avoid sooo many accidents because of a persons inabilility to flip a little lever within a fingers measure away!

A dumb "twat" in his BMW almost took me out at 120kph because he didn't use his indicators...

Isn't this just a temporary solution whilst they are busy building / upgrading infrastructure for 2010?

I think indicators are optional extras on beemers and cost almost as much as the car... hence no beemer driver has them by the looks of it:confused::p

well, the other day i was merrily on my way to work, traffic was a bit congested, ambulance needed to get through, no emergency lane, and it was doing so very easily. everyone in the middle lane just moved over to the left/right so it could get past. it was quite a beautiful sight.

Twice now when changing lanes with my indicators on and enough space I almost hit someone because they just blatantly ignore you and accelerate when they see you trying to change lanes. And they don't accelerate slowly mind you, they had to be flooring it... These days I try to avoid the N1 at all costs...

Being from Cape Town, the moment I get onto the road I factor in the idiots. I've also noticed the disappearing yellow lines....I guess its a good thing especially during peak-hour traffic and off-peak you can use simple logic when you see an emergency vehicle in the rear-view.
