New iMacs

According to one source, Apple has issued to suppliers three new iMac price points for models that are expected to be immediately available following their introduction on Tuesday.

Apple currently offers two 17-inch iMac configurations (for $999 and $1199, respectively), a 20-inch configuration for $1499, and a high-end 24-inch configuration for $1999. However, the new pricing information suggest Apple will drop one configuration and sell just three models at $1199, $1499 and $1799.

Mac mini rumors

Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed last minute reports that Apple may extend the life of the Mac mini by squeezing another slight revision from the petite desktop's existing architecture.

According to those reports, such a move would be accompanied by significant price drops that would allow the forgotten Mac to linger for several more months as an extremely low cost, low performance offering.

iLife

Finally, there are also rumblings that a new version of iLife will indeed see some attention on Tuesday (possibly encompassing a new version of iWork to form a more compelling solution).

As with all last-minute rumors, AppleInsider recommends taking this information with a grain of salt and waiting out the last few hours to hear the official word from Apple.

Is the iMac really that under powered?

It would be nice to see them squeeze out another mini - great little machine. I'd also love to see iLife finally revised, especially if iPhoto closes the gap between its current version and Aperture.

iMac . . dont care . . hate being desk-bound. :)

EDIT - they've just announced a new brushed metal iMac - 20" and 24". Glossy screens (yuck).

Up to 2.4GHz Core 2 Extreme processor, up to 4GB of memory. ATI Radeon HD graphics card, up to 1TB of hard drive storage. 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0 built-in.

iLife '08 announced - iphoto seems to have inherited some of apertures feature set.

iMovie seems to have a few new features too, as does the rest of the suite.

iWork finally includes a spreadsheet - maybe I can say ciao to office?

Mac Mini got a boost to C2D.

All looks good. Wish they would update the Macbook before september though.

iWork is getting there, but Office '07 is really nice. I might have to stick with it for some time to come. :( ;)

Doubt it - they updated it in May this year.

With the first universal Mac Office only coming out next year I'm definitely going to give iWorks '08 a shot.

I've abandoned ||s as well so Office '07 isnt even a consideration for me.

EDIT - pity OO is such a dog.

If Numbers is really properly xls compatible then mac office is going to be hard to justify. USD100 for a five seat family pack, there is no way that M$ can keep up.

Dont forget that M$oft offers the multiple licence Student/Teacher edition for about $100.

They are also promising the much-awaited Leopard OS in October. That should keep them busy - and possibly they will also announce other h/w revisions.

Glossy screens seem to be in vogue. The new ACER high-end laptops have them too.

If I was paranoid about someone sneaking up on my I'd want a glossy screen - otherwise - no thanks.

Not too sure about the new macbook style keyboards. I've heard mostly positive things about them from MB owners.

I know - I'm just joking.

I prefer a notebook too, but I must admit, since getting my Mini (last PPC model, nowhere near as powerful as my notebook) I've grown so fond of it I can forgive it for not being mobile.

I have a glossy screen on my Compaq, and I like it, except near a window or outside.

Wish they would. Perhaps Sept is the wrong time to buy... I really gave OO a try, but it falls short and not ready for full-time use yet. I do like the .dbf ability in the spreedsheet app. Office should really do that.

Not everyone can get the student/teacher discount, so yeah, 100 bucks is a good deal.

My complaint is it seems apple makes a really great app and then lets it falter with limited support after introduction. They really need to dedicate programmers to certain apps and just turn out updates like mad to make it the best app available, hands down.

I dont know anyone who's tried to get the s/t edition and has failed.

You can walk into any Look & Listen and buy one off the shelf. I know a few people who have done just that.

In SA or USA?

I always buy my Apple stuff using my old University card from the states (no date on it, I age nicely :p ). My next purchase will be @ student rate as well, but in USA. Is it easy in SA to get the rate?

In the US - never tried in SA but I doubt its complicated. Moot point really as I'm hoping to be able to avoid office in the future anyway :D

I have my doubts about iWork being able to replace office. do you all think it really can?

Sure - why not? Keynote is already better than powerpoint and pages is pretty good once you get used to it. For me it all depends on Numbers.

I really should fiddle with pages some day. It looks basic online, but haven't dug into it.

What about database apps like Access? And Mail needs some inprovements, IMHO.
