New IS ADSL Offering Available

For roughly double the cost of the satellite option, the word "should" must be removed.

Because of the Fibre Optic links it should have better latency and throughput...

A bit of recycled old news that was already reported in iWeek.

IS announces ADSL pricing
Author: Patrick Heske
Issued: Thursday, March 30, 2006 (on the web site even before this date)

... IS Business ADSL Express 512kbps costs R1 200, while its 1 024kbps costs R2 300 per month, with a setup cost of R750. The Satellite ADSL 512kbps option costs R1 350 per month, and 1 024kbps R2 700 per month, with a setup cost of R1 500. The fibre ADSL 512 kbps costs R2 500 per month, while the 1 024 kbps option comes in at R5 000 per month, with a setup cost of R1 500

“Fibre Business ADSL would not be subject to these same risks since it makes use of Fibre Optic links via the SAT 3 cable. Because of the Fibre Optic links it should have better latency and throughput as well as higher availability and run fewer errors,” he continued.

This has not been the case for the last couple of months. There are almost monthly problems with the SAT3 link causing slow speeds and loss of connectivity.

Thousands of rands per month for what amounts to a similar service as you can get in other countries for a few hundred rand per month at most. Colour me unimpressed. Not only do we remain a backwater, but the DoC's refusal to allow a free market is ensuring we become more of a backwater every day.
