there is always the question of "will your current plastic bezel fit your new writer?"
each manufacturer seems to like using their own mounting system for the plastic bezel, so the bezel form a sony drive wont fit a panasonic drive, and neither fits a QSI drive etc.
However they are all pin compatable. So any drive should work in any machine, once you have figured out the master/slave stuff.....oh, I didnt mention the master slave stuff?
ok, some laptops only got one ide channel physically connected, some have two.
If one channel, you have master for the hdd, and slave for the optical drive.
If two channels, then both are masters...see where I am going?
There is a 50/50 chance the optical drive you buy will be a master device, and a 50/50 chance you laptop will expect a slave device, which means: hanging on post screen.
You change laptop drives from master to slave and vice versa typically with a firmware flash. If you want to go that route, then get yourself a laptop optical-->desktop ide convertor, and flash it on a desktop, because if you need to flash it, it probably means it is because your laptop doesnt boot. Which means you cant flash it, coz the laptop doesnt boot
But ya, master/slave and bezel issues aside, all drives work in all machines since about 2000
