I'm looking to buy a new laptop but have never owned my own one, only the work crap.

I want something smallish with a nice soft touch keyboard. USB 3 would be nice too. Budget is flexible, say between 5 and 8 grand, maybe more if I see something I really like.

Suggestions?

Hey hey...

I would look at something with at least an i3 CPU in it... and it all depends on what you need it for. Is battery life important, will it be used for gaming or graphics...?

This helps decide on the requirements and also affects the price.

Esquire here on mybb has some specials from time to time, some nice i5 Toshibas and Lenovos recently within your budget.

I would identify what you need to do on the laptop first, then fit the specs to this.

Add a bit more and get an ultrabook. You rather get something high spec now so that you don't have to upgrade for a while

Hmmm... ultrabooks... you pay more for thin. Unless you need thin and slightly longer battery life, and have around R13k budget (the high spec ultrabooks can cost even more) get yourself a R7k notebook and slap in an SSD for a grand... just as good even if not as thin.

OK, usually I would flesh out my posts a bit more so here goes.

Basically I'm just going to be using it for occasional work in front of the TV. Now this isn't just Excel and stuff, it would be some MATLAB stuff as well so I'd prefer an i5. Rest of the time it'll just be browsing and maybe some videos and stuff. Things that I'm looking out for:

  • Firstly, I want something with a very 'soft' keyboard, like not those budget clicky type keyboards. Best example would be the Macbooks, a keyboard like that would be perfect.
  • Next is the trackpad. Ideally, I'm looking for something that has a textured trackpad, not something completely smooth. I've seen this on a few random laptops in Incredible.
  • USB3 ports. I have a USB3 external so I want at least ONE of these ports.
  • I don't really care if it comes with a 120GB HDD, my plan is to buy an SSD and use that from the getgo.
  • As much RAM as possible. 4GB bare minimum, 8GB ideal.
  • An IPS type glossy screen, I'm not a fan of matte screens on laptops.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Is there anywhere reputable online that I can shop for laptops?

Well, I have used Nivo, Rebeltech, Wootware and Sybaritic and they have all proved to be reputable online retailers and offer good value for money with their pricing and service.

Some notebooks in the R8000 range with all the above requirements might prove to be a bit tricky... especially the textured touchpads... but I have worked with some of the new Gigabyte and Asus laptops around the 8K range, and they are nicely built and have good specs with 2 year warranties.

I will see if I can post some links shortly for these...

Here... from Rebeltech...

I've been shopping around alot for a new laptop, and have seen Samsung laptops are the best priced with the best specs.

Similar spec Asus, Acer and Dell laptops cost about 20%+ more than the Samsung series.

So unless there is quite a difference between the above mentioned and Samsung that I don't know about then I'll be going for a new Samsung.
