Thanks for your reply but it's not exactly what I'm looking for

The above links that I have pasted have a better res and a i7 CPU with 2 gigs of gfx instead of 1 and 8 gigs of ram :)

Also looking for this. 3610qm, hd display, 4+ gb ram, dedicated graphics, ssd if possible, but i think it's cheaper to add this after.

Hey guys,

I'd like to get myself a new laptop, the budget is roughly 10k, can stretch a little further if needed.

This is what I had in mind, I'd like to use it for gaming as well. I know it isn't a big budget for a gaming laptop but I don't play demanding games.

Any help will be appreciated,
Lucien

Both of you, the Y580 is exactly what you're looking for. If you don't like the looks of Windows 7 Basic the upgrade to Home Premium isn't a lot. Games will be running at 720p and high settings with ease.

For R10k price range the Lenovo Y580 offers the best gaming graphics card by far!
It comes with Home Premium, which supports up to 16GB of RAM. So you won't really need anything more unless you have to join an Enterprise Domain.

MSI used to have decent gaming laptops for the ~R10-R12k price range, but at this moment their one that is R11k has a lower end graphics card AND CPU than the Lenovo.

The only issues that I do have with the Lenovo are:
1) its small resolution screen
2) 1 year warranty
3) 5400rpm drive - like mentioned in its review: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y580-20994BU-Laptop-Review.78974.0.html < You'll have to fork out R2k on a 256GB SSD if you want to really get rid of this

The Lenovo would make an awesome gaming machine if you just hook it onto an external screen, keyboard & mouse.

I see that there is a Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 209945U that has the following improvements:
1) Full HD screen (1920x1080)
2) BluRay reader
3) 7200rpm HDD
BUT it costs $100 more than the one available in SA, and I've not seen it on any retail price lists in SA yet :(

Secondly, I saw in the USA you can extend the 1 year warranty to 3 years for like $60.

This sounds like the best deal. Really want an hd display. Don't care about the hard drive will get an ssd straight away. Just that manufacturers seem to add 3k+ when there's an ssd.

I'll ask laptops direct if they have this model

Dell XPS i7

I love mine.
The XPS series is incredibly expensive, and you don't even get an XPS in SA that has that class graphics card that the Lenovo Y580 has.

Asus does have laptops with that same graphics card in it, but then it costs you over R20k!
