Hello

I need a new Work laptop.

Budget: R10 000

Minimum requirements:

R7200 RPM hard drive
8Gig ram

It must be able to run VM's, and that is why I need the 8gig ram and a faster hard drive.

Best one I can find at the moment is a Lenovo Ideapad z5070 , but the one I can get only have 6gig ram, and can not be upgraded without replacing all the ram.

Also, where is the best place to buy a laptop from in cape town?

If you do come across something reasonable let me know, been shopping around myself, nothing great unless u wanna go third generation route.

Check kalhari website... Use voucher DEAL100

5400rpm is fine, this whole debate between 7200 and 5400 is all subjective.
Some say the 5400 are way more stable and in many respects faster.

Either way, get an ssd.

At computer mania, I can get the Lenovo IdeaPad Notebbook Z5070 for R9999, only problem is that it has 6gig ram, and looks like it only have 2 slots, we are trying to find out it it has 2x 3 gig sticks, or 1 x 6gig sticks.

Why not make contact with the Somerset West company Wootware, and see what they can source for you. I've used them a few times and their service has always been excellent. Prices are very competitive too.

What will the laptop be used for?

Software Development, but will run VM's most of the time. We cant have all the development environments on one PC, and have several VM's with different IDE's and java versions and all of those kind of stuff to enable us to do development. It sounds stupid but its actually the best way we came up with doing development.

It looks like the best option will be to look for a 3rd generation Intel laptop. The IdeaPad Notebbook Z5070 only have one ram slot...

I was asking due to the memory limitations.
By the sounds of things you will need more mem.

I am currently using my own personal PC, which have 8gig ram, but also a SSD and WD greed drive. All the VM's is running of the green drive and is performing very well.

8 Gig ram will be enough. The Green drive can also go up to 7200rpm, so its not entirely rubbish...

Toshiba's L50-A0424 is the cheapest lappie packing a Core i7-4700MQ out there. Stick another 4GB module in there for 8GB, or top it out at 16GB. If you can't stretch the budget to accommodate one, save up for a 256GB or 512GB SSD.

You're still stuck with a TN panel and a crappy 1366x768 screen, but hey - it's the cheapest Core i7 mobile laptop out there. Upgrade the warranty to three years and you should be set.

I like that idea as well... 4GB module isnt too expensive. and SSD = 256GB minimum Id sat and run external USB3 drive.

i7 and HD4600 will run that panel fine. sure that can run a 1080p panel just fine and sure OP has one some where...

It looks like I will have to work with the 5400rpm drive for the moment. Will let you guys know what we get in the end. It sounds like we need to get 3 new laptops, so the more we will save the better.
