Sweden has passed some ground-breaking new laws to curb filesharing and hunt down offenders. The exceptional results may cause other countries to follow their lead.

New laws against filesharing.

Don't expect this of Sweden, home of TPB.
 
Wow, all this serves to show is how much business the MPAA and the RIAA are keeping from the internet!!! :eek:
 
well, that is just the thing. They are going about this totally the wrong way. The file sharers will always be there, they are just going to find another way to do it. The only way to win them over will be to turn them into paying customers, and to do that you have to offer them a good product at a reasonable price.
 
Imagine if a DVD Movie cost R40, a month after it's cinema release ?

they might not make R150, but at least they will be selling.

Instead of selling 1 Million copies of the new Metalica CD @ R129, why not sell them for R30?

I know what you all are going to say, but I say this:

If I was selling steak, I can't go cheaper because Cows cost a lot to keep, feed etc/etc.

If I was selling music, and the cost is a piece of plastic made for 23c, Rather put it at a price point that it will sell, and sell it on a massive scale.

why should they make R120 million selling a product to 1 million people when they could make R240 million selling it to 8 million at a quarter of the price

share the music to the world, we all enjoy it. stop being greedy, look further than your nose, and you will be rewarded.

Ok, lets imagine the new BUMP CD came out at R39 - can you guess how many people will buy it, instead of pricing it at R139,99 ?

+1... and distribute widely as well with no form of DRM. Make it available cheaply in every country AT THE SAME TIME!

Because they make more money when they sell it for more. You will probably get something that looks like this:

R20 - 5 000 000 copies = R100 000 000
R40 - 3 000 000 copies = R120 000 0000
...
...
R129 - 1 000 000 copies = R129 000 000
R150 - 500 000 copies = R65 000 000

They have found what they think is the sweet spot. What they fail to recognise is that they would make more money by combining all albums and selling a monthly service with any songs from any artists for a fixed fee through downloading.

I think CD prices are artificially inflated to make it seem worth more than it is, that's why you don't pay R50 or less like you should.

Also, it costs a lot less to create some R&B piece of crap album that can be put together in a week, so that's what they have the radio stations play.
 
It's so simple

lets use Abe's figures:

R40 - 3 000 000 copies = R120 000 0000
R129 - 1 000 000 copies = R129 000 000

Selling it for R40 or for R129 would generate about the same amount of revenue - Around R120 to R129 million. this is a rough estimation we all know that, but there is a point to be made.

Now, selling it at R129 gives you:
- 1 Semi-Happy Person listening to the CD (Semi-Happy, Because he paid quite a lot for the CD, and if he's disapointed with the CD he'd be pretty upset as well - not good because he wasted R139!)

Selling it at R40 gives you:
- 3 Very Happy people listening to the CD (Because they only paid a measly 40 bucks - and if it's bad, not really a biggie, as it was only 40 bucks, and not R129)
- 3 times More Artist Exposure (Hey, 2 extra people bought the CD, and now there is 3 X the chance of them buying a CD from that artist again!)
- A Happier, CD Buying Society - Everyone pays Much less than they used to!
- A Better World - now everyone can have bigger music collections - something everyone wants! People can start enjoying music again, and have more choice - All Humans need Music.
- Less Pirates selling on the street, they can't compete with R40 for an original! no more money going to the bad guys.
- Less Illegal downloads. At 40 bucks a CD why take the time to find and Download Non-Fake, Virus Free, healthy seeders, with no cover & no Actual CD or booklet? You need to buy a blank CD to listen it in your car, and take the time to burn the audio CD, etc
- As there are less Piracy on the Web, it would also release all the congestion going on due to people downloading terrabytes of Illegal Media.

Humans need music. why keep it from them? why deny the "not so rich" of humanity the pleasure of listening to music ?

IMO this can apply to other forms of entertainment too - not only music but Movies, Series, Games.

The Money is not in the Plastic Disc, the money is in the 0's and 1's on the disc.
