Hi peeps

Need some help please.

I'm looking at getting a new TV. I saw game has a special on at the moment, a 40" full HD LED TV - UA40D50 and HD pvr for R4999

My other options is the KDL-40CX520 (depending on pricing) or KDL40BX420

This would mostly be used for movies/episodes, lots of sports (primarily rugby/tennis/cricket) and occasional gaming. What would you recommend and why? (keep in mind options are'nt limited to these models, but my budget is)

Thanks a lot

What ever you do, just don't buy a plasma, you'll regret it eventually, if I where you, stick to Samsung or LG though, but if you're not in a rush, I would say wait for Samsung's OLED TV's to make an appearance

Hmm, my in laws have a 42" Samsung plasma, was well priced, awesome picture quality and haven't had a day's issues with it. Why don't you recommend it?

The problem with plasma is that it deteriorates the more you use it, my parents also have a plasma TV (now in their bedroom) that we had to replace because of the ghosting and deteriorating picture quality, it was amazing when new, but after about 3 years, of it being on all day (06:00 to about 8:00 and 15:00-20:00) it was just horrible

Firstly plasma's short lifespan is a myth nowadays, newer models have much improved lifespan (200,000 hours until half life I heard).

Secondly you cannot take your 3 year old tech and apply it to more modern tech. It could have even been faulty for all we know.

Plasma in fact suits movies/episodes, as well as sports. Also its motion handling and low input lag makes it excellent for gaming.

The only downside IMO is the resolution, what will you be gaming on? For console it's great if you're sitting 2.5m+ back. But for up close gaming and/or connecting to PC for PC gaming, LCD is a better option. If you need 1080p and sit close then LCD is better.

Thanks PostmanPot

The only gaming I'll be doing on the tv will be either with a Xbox or Ps3 (I own neither at the moment), no pc gaming. From my understanding these 2 consoles only support 720p, so full hd is'nt an issue, yet. Not sure when the next gen consoles will be released, but gaming on 720p probably won't be an issue as well.

PP, what video file formats does the 43" sammy support? The in law's 42" is +- 2 years old and picture quality is the same as the day they bought it.

Yeah 99% of games are 720p but many support upscaling to 1080p/i. For pure gaming with a budget of R5k I would rather get Full HD LCD/LED-LCD myself as I'd be getting FHD and am used to LCD for gaming. But I'm too used to movies/eps/sport/SD quality of plasma, to ever want LCD for those purposes (or at least entry level LCD, which is what we're talking about). Cheapest FHD plasma from Samsung is 51" and around R9k, and 42" FHD plasma's are scarce. You might want to look at Panasonic plasma's, they have a 42" FHD for around R8k I think...

But perhaps it's unnecessary to worry about resolution. Most of the time it is since our general viewing distances negate the close up benefits of higher definition. Would be great if you could borrow a console and test on your folks' plasma (or 43" at the shops) against the 40" LCD. If you're happy with gaming then plasma is the winner IMO.

P.S. 4 Series plasma and 5 Series LCD, and upwards, all support .mkv (and .mp4 I believe).

If you can find a couple grand more i have seen the 46" sammy led's going for 7799.00, some places will even chuck in a pvr decoder.

Amazing tv. Sport, movies and so look great and gaming is just amazing.

FFS don't bother if you can't even give model numbers.

Keep your panties on lady.

It's a 46" led screen, not difficult to find. Now put them panties back on.

O before them panties come flying off again it's a samsung :p

Sad. You really love hearing the sound of your own uninformed voice. Run along now and perhaps find a BF3 thread where you can actually make a point. ;) Don't bother if you cannot say more than "LED", "awesome", "Samsung".

LOL yea greg why u say you joking when u not?

Oh? :)

And what would that be? Then show where I'm going on like a broken record.

:D

I take it you then retract and admit I actually did no such thing. And that you're just here to troll. You didn't even fully comprehend the OP, funny after admitting countless times how your old plasma was best for movies and sport, as per OP. Nowadays you just get excited at omitting the full term for LED-LCD, use it in unrelated threads; and now even advise people wanting a TV for different things based on your use of TV as a computer screen for gaming 90-99% of the time, let alone a damn console, as per the OP.

Pity since some of us actually want to help others. Seems no one cared to read my post in any case, just constantly blabbering about big bad plasma with no regard for OP and others.

Ok, the 43" plasma was R5400 and LA40D550 is R4600. Bought the 40" lcd. will let you guys know what I think later tonight.
