New LCD/LED (or plasma) 40" +-R5000

Wait so i recommended him a led and you moan about it when you recommended one as well

Yeah 99% of games are 720p but many support upscaling to 1080p/i. For pure gaming with a budget of R5k I would rather get Full HD LCD/LED-LCD myself as I'd be getting FHD and am used to LCD for gaming. But I'm too used to movies/eps/sport/SD quality of plasma, to ever want LCD for those purposes (or at least entry level LCD, which is what we're talking about). Cheapest FHD plasma from Samsung is 51" and around R9k, and 42" FHD plasma's are scarce. You might want to look at Panasonic plasma's, they have a 42" FHD for around R8k I think...

LOL but i'm a trolll?

Ok, the 43" plasma was R5400 and LA40D550 is R4600. Bought the 40" lcd. will let you guys know what I think later tonight.

Nice one. Amazing that the plasma is so much more. Costs more, uses more power geez i would have thought 40-43" plasma's would be 3.5k or 4k.

Sounds like the 3D model (D490)? 43" non 3D plasma (D450) should be R3,999 - R4,500.

Great price on the LA40D550 though. I don't think you will/can be disappointed. :D

What ever you do, just don't buy a plasma, you'll regret it eventually, if I where you, stick to Samsung or LG though, but if you're not in a rush, I would say wait for Samsung's OLED TV's to make an appearance

The problem with plasma is that it deteriorates the more you use it, my parents also have a plasma TV (now in their bedroom) that we had to replace because of the ghosting and deteriorating picture quality, it was amazing when new, but after about 3 years, of it being on all day (06:00 to about 8:00 and 15:00-20:00) it was just horrible

Drivel. And i puked in my mouth from the cr@p smell of this **** post.

Haven't had a lot of time to watch so far, but I'm thoroughly impressed, even more so because of the price.

SD dstv content is more than acceptable, but there is obviously a difference between PQ compared to the 42" plasma. (a little of topic, is there any firmware available for the 42" sammy to get video playback from usb flashdisk/hdd working?)

We watched a few sd episodes yesterday and I'm more than happy, will probably get a hd movie going tonight.

@PP, not sure whether or not the plasma was the 3d version, but I doubt it.

Glad you're happy.

PS43D450 usually goes for R3,999 - R4,999 max. It's never been more expensive than 40" 5 Series LCD. PS43D490 3D goes for R5,500 - R6,500, only this one has been more than 40" LCD. So that store either had the 3D model at an average price, or the non 3D at a really excessive price which would be weird considering the awesome price of the 40" you got.

The plasma is probably the older C430 model, these don't have USB media players, only 450 and up.

I must have missed the 3d part then, no biggie though as I'm very happy.

A pity about the media player functionality of the plasma. What would be a good value for money media player that would support .x264 as well as xvid/avi not too bothered about a hdd a I have enough to put into a media player.

Another thing, how do I determine the optimal settings for my LCD tv, I'm a total noob. I have searched for color/contrast settings, but haven't found anything of use.

There are quite a few, WD TV Live is nice and has wifi built in for fairly cheap at around R1,100. Also has decent support/updates. There are much cheaper ones though, as little as R700, but they usually don't have such good support and perhaps a few other down sides like software GUI. I have a Mede8er MED500X.

I use Normal setting on my Samsung 5 Series LCD with about 50% cell light level, 60% brightness and 80% contrast. I guess it depends on your room, if it's bright you'll need more cell light and brightness obviously. I also have dynamic contrast etc. disabled as it causes loss of detail. If you have a picture of content you've watched a lot, why not play it on the TV and adjust it to what you know.

Hi peeps

Need some help please.

I'm looking at getting a new TV. I saw game has a special on at the moment, a 40" full HD LED TV - UA40D50 and HD pvr for R4999

My other options is the KDL-40CX520 (depending on pricing) or KDL40BX420

This would mostly be used for movies/episodes, lots of sports (primarily rugby/tennis/cricket) and occasional gaming. What would you recommend and why? (keep in mind options are'nt limited to these models, but my budget is)

Thanks a lot

This is the best deal on the market buddy.

I hope the LCD you bought is really good.

I bought a Toshiba PS1V... (something something) REGZA. It is pretty good - 40" LED LCD FHD and supposedly plays downloaded movies directly from your flashdrive which other tvs don't do apparently.

It is R4,299 at Pick n Pay right now and is not being advertised.

I have come here for something else though.

I pressed the teledata button on the Toshiba remote and a page with some current news appeared.

While I am going to read more about this functionality in the manual, I would just like to find out from you guys what services there are for these new age TVs here in SA and not just generically.

Are there digital signals that these tvs can pick up that are not necessarily via DStv or are these signals only available via DStv because digital signals have not been allocated yet by the DoC and thus are not being used yet?

Just would like to know.

Nothing new Killa, do not expect anything less, that's how he "earns" his daily "satisfaction"
As some always say, Bullsheet Baffles Brains (BBB) applies here!

wily me, if anything it's you coming here for your daily satisfaction. You trolled/used us (TV sub-forum) for 3 months while upping your post count and registration time before you could bypass other sub-forum anti troll measures in order to start spreading your nasty tentacles elsewhere, so it's no surprise why you're back here again today after I joined you in your new preferred hunting ground. Yet I did not troll you. It just goes to show who the troll really is.
