Since I've recently been offered a fair chunk of change to lure me back into a field I'm not too fond of (web design but fortunately its a once off job) I figured I'd treat myself to either a G9 or a new lens.

I've currently got the following lenses:
Canon 18-55mm EF-S f/3.5-5.6 - kit lens
Canon 50mm EF f/1.8
Canon 70-200 EF f4
Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro (in for repairs)

What might I be missing lens wise that I would want to forgo the G9?

I'd go for a dedicated macro lens - Canon 100mm F2.8

But that's just me :)
Thanks - I thought about a macro but I have a macro attachment for the 50mm (that has so far been serving me well) as well as the macro capabilities of the 28-300 . . .

The 100mm does make also make a nice portrait lens by all accounts.

Do you need the G9 for portability?

I've got another idea. :D

Sell everything. Then get the Nikon D300 with 18-200VR kit. I was at the shop the other day, and well... All I can think of is this kit, so I'm not being very helpful to you. :D

300mm f2.8 with a 1.4x and 2x converter. And sell the 28 -300 to make up a bit for what you lack to make up the balance in cash needed.

My 2c worth.

No thanks - I shoot canon.

Are we on the same page? The Canon EF 300mm f2.8 L II IS USM is a r53k lens - the extenders are an extra r4k each. Selling the 28-300 isnt going to make up the R55600 difference between that lens and the G9 no matter how much I hope it will.

Up the price you are charging the client:)

A 300 f2.8 is the business as far I am concerned. I am just dreaming...

Well dream with your own money! :p

Also need to check out some macbook prices so the missus can get rid of (aka donate to my camera bag) her 12" iBook

Do you mean you have a Canon, or you'll only shoot on Canon?
Both . . . either . . . take your pick depending on which you feel is more relevant to the topic at hand. :)

You're a brand loyalist? :(

[hypothetical]You mean that if Pentax came out with a digital camera that cost less than a Canon and whipped a 4x5" transparency's ass, you would buy the Canon? :D[/hypothetical]

I wouldnt not buy a camera because it wasnt a canon but there's more to it than just a body (or bodies) that I have.

There's the glass, the flash I have, all the other accessories that I have which I'd need to replace and even if I got top price second hand it wouldnt be enough to replace everything right off the bat.

As soon as you buy that second lens any manufacturer has got a significant hook in you. Everyone should realise that by now.

EDIT - there's also no point not waiting a generation to see how Canon responds to the recent developments.

Sigma 10-20? I really really like that lens.

Speaking of the G9 though, my colleague and I did some pixel peeping on pictures taken with his G9 - the jpeg image quality suck as much as any other point and shoot I've seen, but the RAW is pretty damn sharp considering the small sensor.

I want to add something more to this. I seem to remember you do have a P&S. What does the G9 offer that the current one doesn't?

I like the idea of RAW on a P&S and I've had some serious thoughts about replacing my cybershot for that. But I've come to realise that 99% of what I do in Aperture is adjusting exposure. In part because the I'm still getting to know the 40D's metering (it doesn't always do what I expect) and in part because a shoot in Av or manual mostly and often with a fixed ISO, and a lot of times a quick photo moment means I don't have time to expose properly. Anyway, the Cybershot nails exposure without fail, unless I try to force it to be semi-manual, and even then it's pretty good at it. So even if it had RAW I wouldn't use it much, I think. Which means the G9 doesn't offer me anything worth spending G9 kinda money. Besides, if I'm going somewhere where I expect there to be half decent photo ops, I take the DSLR. I'm sure you do too.

Different strokes for different folks though.

Is that the Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM? Is it EF or EF-S?

Raw quality sounds encouraging because I only intend on shooting in that mode (Why? Because I can :D)

Actually - apart from an ageing 3.1mp IXUS I dont.

That's the one. I only bought it for the odd wide shot but it ends up staying on my camera much more than that. It's a very sharp lens too - if you want I can send you a full size picture taken with it.

Is it EF or EF-S?

DG = EF
DC = EF-S

So yeah, it's not going to go well on your 1Ds mk III when you get it. They have a 12-24 which is a DG lens and otherwise more or less the same. Slightly more expensive.

Right.

Not quite. The coupling to the camera is different with EF and EF-S lenses (EF red dot, EF-S white dot). Both the DG and DC lens attach on the red dot. You can physically put your DC lens on a full frame camera, but you can't do that with an EF-S lens, unless you modify the lens mount.

I saw a shot on your flickr of a pub but it kinda looked distorted to me (though English pubs are often like that irl anyway :D)
