New Linux Vixta! ( Linux version of Vista )

OK more info.

If Windows Vista is so terrible, how come there's someone in the open-source community who wants to copy it? That's the case with the latest Linux distro, a Vista look-alike called Vixta.

The project is hosted by Sourceforge, the online home of numerous open-source efforts, large and small. Vixta fits into the latter category.

There's hardly any information on the effort, other than a short blurb, which says it's based on the Fedora distro of Linux. Fedora is itself a project which evolved out of the Red Hat community, and is still sponsored by the enterprise-Linux powerhouse.

Vixta appears to be the brainchild of one A. Paulo Santos, who has posted most of the messages on the short Vixta-info mailing list, including one announcing the availability of Vixta release 094.

Vixta's home page touts the imminent availability of version 095, and enumerates the goals of the project as follows:

1. Absolutely free, in every sense;

2. Spread Linux to the "masses";

3. ABN – Absolutely No Config.;

4. User-Friendly;

5. Eye-catching. Familiar look and feel.

Not much else is extant about Vixta. Word of the distro became widespread when Digg picked up the first story on Vixta, posted by the Tux Enclave blog. The blog has become the home for a healthy discussion on the topic.

Many of the Tux Enclave respondents appear mystified as to the rationale for Vixta. "Why would I switch to Linux just because it looks like Vista? I have that with Vista," writes one. A number of others wonder when Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) will sue for emulating Vista's look and feel.

The most insightful comment I saw was this: "They've entirely missed the point about what makes an OS function. Vista isn't just about a new GUI (which looks much better than this attempt), but a way of organizing your computer. Plus, this Vixta doesn't run Windows software, so it's no competitor."

On the other side, there's this: "This is wonderful! I can't wait to download the distro and taunt my friends with Vista."

Personally, I think a Linux distro which looks like Vista is a great idea. If the code can be solidified, it could leave Ubuntu in the dust in terms of end-user appeal

Vixta can be downloaded for free from the sourceforge site, here.

Theres a big difference in copying the look and copying the bugs.
Vista looks great, but it is awful to use.
I upgraded from Vista to XP quick quick.

How much more awful can Vista be than XP? I understand people who use Mac or Linux better than someone using XP then saying Vista is awful to use. Most people's argument is that Vista is almost exactly the same as XP and not much of an upgrade...

Vista to me is fine to use, I was surprised by how alike it is to XP, what bugs did you have, drivers/compatability?

ekhaat vista is basically xp with a new skin and a few upgrades

they have renamed everything to make appear different

in saying this i cannot use xp every again, i love vista 64 bit :)

i only loaded it about 2 months ago because of drivers but now vista has no problems at all and it runs better than xp

Vista, when released, was very unstable. Nothing worked on it. Problem comes in that it's not as backward compatible as most people would like. Random crashes because of poor driver support.

Second problem is the price. Most people are happy with XP and wont foot a bill to upgrade to the "new skin". In short, XP was just (currently) to familiar and is working for most people.

I'm opinion is this: Vista for DX10, otherwise XP is fine. Going to wait for prices to drop and for the service packs to come out before changing, give it a year or so.

dude prices wont drop

how long has xp home and pro been about the same price?

vista is not for dx 10, there is alot of good with vista and its totally stable now and has drivers for everything

lol, i must be one of the lucky ones, i got vista within the first week of release and it was more stable for me than xp after a clean install. I can honestly say i have never had problems except for my one sound card that didn't have drivers. The one game that i play now and again was also supported.

I use vista and xp. Some games is even faster in Vista than in Xp. I used Linux for a day. Have too many problems with it

Sorry about the bump guys.

Is there a local mirror or ftp where this is available. Or even an nzb? I can't seem to find any means of obtaining this locally.

Killa: the linux. I know that Vista is available everywhere but Vixta seems to be available only internationally. I wouldn't say it's kuk though, it seems ok.

Has anyone installed this yet? I just looked at the page above and it has a screenshot of the desktop and wow does it look amazing ( probly going to move over now from the cr@ppy M$ ).

But before i move over, has anyone had any experience with this? If so, what is the resource usage of it? Software compatibilities ( since i have unisa software which i need to run namely Dev-C++ and Boland Delphi 8 )?

If no one has seen it or tried it, i will try post my comments once my friend finishes dl'n it for me.

Enjoy!
