New Mac Mini, totally redesigned

Yeah they're overpriced! But beautiful machines.
Unlike an iMac a box that size isnt going to sit on my desk so looks aren't really a factor.

I have to point out that since I dont actually have a desk it's a bit of a moot point. :D

I would. The really rather generic Mac Pro's are the most overpriced things to roll out of Cupertino as far as I am concerned.

Legalities aside, I've yet to hear a convincing argument why one shouldn't DIY one to the same specs and save a fortune in the process.

If you're used to a mac you will be frustrated though, it's not just quick and easy and not everything works. well in my situation.

Absolutely. You may end up with a lot of frustration. But if you have the right hardware, and once you get it working, it's excellent.

If/when I get my hands on a suitable MB I'll give it a shot. Right now I've only got Acer ones spare and they're not particularly easy to work with apparently.

Nope. I mean I won't buy an all-in-one design again. I want the parts that get hot separated from the monitor. I've got smcFanControl running with all the fans going flat out and as soon as it hits 45 degrees the horizontal lines start showing on the screen. by 48,49 degrees the whole thing just crashes. I don't think it will survive another summer.

Like I said, I got four years of great service out of it. But now I can't even blow out the dustbunnies and the disadvantages of the design are just hitting home. I want a mac that (a) I can open up to service to some extent and (b) with a separate monitor.

What does that give us? Mini: around ten grand. Mac Pro: 22 grand for a bottom-end modeland let's not even ask about the price of the 8-core, that would pay the national debt. There really should be something in between those two.

Well, yes, there is: a Hackintosh. But I am not quite there yet.

Ok yea, I get you. I do understand your gripes with the iMac expecially if you are hitting the CPU hard. This mac mini seems like a brilliant machine, and i am seriously considering getting one. Probably will actually. Been connecting my macbook to my screen, but i have been keen to get a dedicated desktop for a while now.
