Yeah you won't see much benefit going to 12-core. You will get a huge speed increase if you get good SSD's though.
As for comparison to hackintosh: Here's an 8-core Hackintosh from prices at Newegg:
Dual Socket 1366 Motherboard : $300
Let's take 2 2.66ghz Processors - $310 each = $620.
3x2gb FB-DIMM ddr3 RAM = 3x$65= $195
Let's say $100 for a hard drive.
$50 for an optical drive, or two
$150 for an Antec 1kW PSU
A nice case from Lian-li. $150
Wireless mouse & kb - let's say $60
ATi 5770 graphics - $170
So adding it up I get $1800 - quite a lot cheaper than $3299 for the Mac Pro 8-core.
Did I leave anything out?
The 12-core has 2 processors which each cost $1000! Damn!
edit: I forgot bluetooth, wifi and firewire. Let's say $200 for all that. That brings it up to $2000. So hackintosh is cheaper. But you still don't get the nice drawers for your hard drives!
SSD really provides a quantum leap in performance, CPUs are so fast that processes are bound by I/O speeds. For example, with a good SSD, apps seem to open like 5 times faster.
Turbo Boost to dynamically boost processor speeds up to 3.6 GHz; and Hyper-Threading to create up to 24 virtual cores.
True - they might even run faster. But that goes without saying since they [-]do much less[/-] are more secure.
Just ordered mine! So excited! This will last me a while, i hope.
Ps. never believe anything said on a forum, unless it's me.
