I thought I'd try out the air since I travel a fair bit, so have just got the deal at Incredible for the 13" air with Ms office which is on special for R12,320.

They knew nothing about it in store of course and there was a lot of wailing and nashing of teeth before they honoured it, but it's purchased and I'm about to try it out.

So first thing is first. ITunes!

I have a US account on my windows laptop full of apps for my mini which I use a fair bit, and my old iPhone 4 which is really just a backup.

So to get it all onto the air which will be my primary laptop, do I just sign into iTunes with my US account details and it'll download my tonnes of apps, both used and unused onto the air? If so, is there any way not to download them all at once, just the ones I need first?

Yip, sign in with US, i didnt download all my apps again BUT did have some issues copying over the iTunes folder directly from Windows to OSX.

First thing id do is create an SA iTunes account, so much easier to buy stuff in iTunes/Mac store.
Already Purchased apps I still use US account , no biggie really BUT since getting mac bought from SA store from then on.

I'm gradually replacing all my US downloaded apps with one's from SA store, easier to update when you have a single account, I also have iTunes match on SA account so use the SA account far more.

You don't need to download any of the iPad mini or iPhone apps to your air. They are all saved in the cloud and can be easily downloaded again by signing into your apple account and downloading them from you mini or iPhone. If you have to have them on your air, then open iTunes, Sign into your account and then authorize your device (it will ask you to enter your password again). Once authorised, connect you iPad mini to your air and then go File-> Devices -> (Device Name)-> Transfer purchases. This will transfer all apps from your iPad to your macbook air. But as mentioned, if you are concerned about space, then rather leave your apps in the cloud.

Apps sometimes do get pulled. If you have the backup locally you can install and reinstall it.

Thats weird, every app I have ever downloaded is there. I do agree having the backup locally but honestly how many times do you uninstall and re-install apps? That is why I prefer to download to my phone and then once every week or two, connect device and transfer purchases just incase something goes wrong and don't have access to internet ect. But anyway, there are many ways to get your purchased apps back.

Happens with music, occasionally too. Sometimes the record label doesn't renew the deal with iTunes, and you will not be able to access it via the cloud again is what I read - not sure if that's the case for something already paid for though? Same with apps. Some of the app-finder apps fell out of flavour with iTunes policy, and were pulled. Doubt one would be able to access them again via the cloud... So might only happen in rare instances, but apparently does.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've not had a chance to really get down and dirty with it yet and actually figure out what is going on with OS X, so I think I'll play around with it and get used to everything before I think about iTunes. Might have more of a clue what you guys are on about then :D

But wow, the track pad is out of this world. I can feel some true love coming my way very soon ;)

Haha, I was using my old laptop this morning and it's a nightmare already after a day away :D

Aji Reader in my case (see other thread).
Related question: Do I have to backup entire library, or I can keep backup individual files which I want to preserve from iTunes pull out? I see some XML control (index) files.

Anyone who hasn't spent time on a Mac's trackpad, simply does not believe me when I suggest that it alone has been worth the premium you pay, for a MBA/MBP over Windows' machines... I simply cannot get my head around how they've never been able to come close - it's the main user-interface with the laptop, and they are terrible in comparison...

Wait until you start instinctively swiping/pinching/scrolling on other laptops, like you do on your Mac - and nothing happens. It's simultaneously funny and frustrating! [As an aside - the BT trackpad is every bit as good, and offers more real estate.]

Regarding iTunes - and I am very cautious about what I say here - but I absolutely loathed iTunes on my old laptop (when all I had was an iPod that required some synching), after having bought the Mac, it's never been an issue for me.

I still struggle with iTunes on my wife's laptop. Don't know if I simply became used to it on my MBP, after using it far more regularly - or whether it's some subtle differences between the OSX and Windows version, that sees me not finding it as intuitive - but that was my experience of it. Once I accepted it for what it was, and sorted out my library - played around with the smartgroups etc., it does all I need it too.

Wait until you start pressing the Windows key and can't understand why copy and paste isn't working on Windows.

Just wondering... Do you use Windows key for copy/paste?

Nope. Control +c for copy and control+v for paste on Windows. On a Mac, it is Mac key +c and Mac key +v. The problem is. The Windows button sits exactly on a PC keyboard where the Mac key sits on an Apple keyboard. So, if you don't focus, your fingers presses the Windows key instead of Control.

I did it this morning again. :(. In a meeting.

Still happens to me after many years... I think it was purposefully done that way to point out mac users - hahaha

I am not MAC user, so please forgive me... I also hate 'Windows' key, Bill Gates invention. It is where 'Alt' key should be. In fact I use (where possible) old IBM keyboard without 'Windows' keys.

Re: copy/paste I use <Ctrl+ Insert> and <Shift+Insert> instead, still working on Windows and is more convenient for entering single hand while operating simultaneously left-hand mouse. :)

I have never heard of that combination - geez, still learning after all this time! Thanks!
