There have been quite a few developments in the last week or 2 regarding MyWireless packages which I thought I would let you know about.

Firstly there is a VERY limited special offer of MyWireless on the bundled 2 year package where you pay R499 for the modem and R144 activation fee. Then your monthly subscriptions for the 128, 256 and 512 are R499, R699 and R1449 respectively. This means a HUGE saving on the 128 and 256 packages of around R2500! But I can't see this special lasting more than about 1 more week - they are selling out SO fast it's scary.

Then on the unbundled side, the 12 and 24 month contracts have been dropped leaving all unbundled contracts on month by month contracts only. Then you pay the R144 activation and the modem itself costs R2999. Costs are R499, R699 and R1349 for the 3 packages respectively.

Hope those of you who were put off by the upfront costs might reconsider now.

Incidentally we haven't had a chance to update all the details on the website yet but you can take it from me that these are the costs.

Cheers

The modem costs R2600 on Sentech's site. How do you justify R2999?

you're having a giggle, right?

R499/month for 128 (which to all intents and purposes you would be lucky to get 8kb/s out of)
even if this is considered cheap, S.A. needs to "get with the program" a bit man FFS.

Its quite correct

I tried senteck for a week 7day return basis. They do have new specials but are not on website yet.

its was ok, but lossy because of no signal in my area.
otherwise it was ok, when pings were good they were 100-110
i could get up to 25-28 on the 256 package.
No CAP ERM OK SOFTCAP
didnt have time to try much else.

If there was signal enuff i would have sold my Iburst

Hi JustConnect, does that means that existing 24 month unbundled contracts directly with Sentech will automatically be converted to month-by-month contracts?

LoL funny advertising, "Selling out like crazy"

That is hilarious :)

I don't see how this could possibly impress me.

Basically, for existing users, nothing changes, apart from the possibility that our contract MIGHT be turned into monthly contracts.

monthly subscription charges don't change, and especially for the 512 K package they are RIDICULOUS.

You are just confirming my natural distrust of resellers by taking a nice cut on the modem in return for what service?

I will respond to the questions/comments. Luke777, no your contract will not be converted AFAIK. If Vodacom brings out a better package tomorrow than the one you signed up for a week ago, well that is the way it goes. There is always going to be something better just around the corner. That is the world of IT for you. But since you are post contract, why not end your contract and then take a new one at the lower rate? Ok you will incurr a new R144 activation fee but you will save R50 per month so will pay it off quickly.

Thewanted, yes I know that Sentech have the modems at a lower price. Feel free to buy the modem from them directly. The difference we offer lies in the user experience. We obviously have connected MANY users and we have picked up a few tricks. An analogy might be servicing your car. You can go to the local car parts shop and get all the bits and pieces and service your car yourself. If you know what you are doing, you will get it right. If you don't know what you are doing you probably won't and you will be left to struggle. To me, R400 is not a lot to pay for the convenience of having someone visit you, explain the whole product, demonstrate it, fill in all the paperwork, install the modem, upgrade the modem to the latest firmware, help you connect up your email, advise regarding security etc. And if something goes wrong in 4 months time, you have someone (a name) to call to help you again. But as always, it's your choice.

VLAD I have a wry smile on my face. The packages are cheaper than before, the contract period shorter and the service is better and yet somehow your post makes it seem that things are somehow worse?!! Your natural distrust of resellers?! Every company had to start somewhere and we are going to be here long after the fly by nights are gone. So sure keep your wits and if the guy seems totally shifty give him the boot. But if you never support anyone but the big companies (to whom you will be just 1 more customer in many cases) it seems to me that you will only be left with the megacompanies. When all the competition is gone, we'll be left with a monopoly situation. The man in the street will be thinking "man I wish I had supported some of those other businesses who were giving a good service but I didn't go with them because they weren't a name I had seen on TV." But once again, it is your decision.

Take care

1. no they are not, only the upfront cost is less, but you're still better off buying a modem directly from sentech.
2. true, granted
3. Better service? The only thing that i see is that sentech has resolved many of the technical issues they had and that the speed is actually what they promise it will be.

I understand that as a reseller you're protecting your business, but your argument is seriously flawed. No, i don't only buy from megacompanies, but i rather deal with the source (sentech in this case ) than with resellers, who have no control over the 'product' they're selling, and who have to refer me to the original provider in case of problems anyway.

Sure there might be a market for installation support etc, but it's not rocket science to do it yourself.

All i'm saying is that i'm not sharing your level of excitement regarding your latest offerings...

I dont know if this will capture the dial up market...

R499 + R144 = (roughly) R650 to get going...
then R500 per month...

I'm on dial up and i NEVER pay that much for my monthly internet costs, including line rental and ISP et al. Sure, its 24/7 (debateable) with no cap (download too much and you are in the dog box) but its still a lot of money for something only twice as fast as dial up (also debateable).

For just a wee bit more a person can try ADSL 192. Faster, low latency, also 24/7.

Were these the prices refered to earlier, where the article on MyADSL mentioned how MyWireless will be going after the dial up market?

nope, I'm a dialup user looking for a better alternative, and nope...
This ain't going to cut it.
First off, from what I hear, MyWireless is a stone throw away from using smoke signals, iBurst is having more problems than Bush and Telkom is laughing all the way to the bank.

They want the dialup market, they'll have to work harder.

To be realistic, I can get the same speed connection for cheaper from various WISPs. So why opt for a binding contract that costs more? WISP it is then :)

Sentech have done all the damage to themselves...they deserve all the mistrust and derision we can muster...

Who the hell would ever CHOOSE to be chained to an incompetent, backward, lying and generally shifty parastatal like Sentech?
-> Those that have no other option (ie. no DSL available, no iBust signal)
-> Those that think R499 pm for 128k is "cheap".

For the first group, well that sucks, sorry for you.
For the second group, you better THINK AGAIN!
You may pay R499 per month, but you will pay far more in:
- looong telephone calls to useless "support" personnel
- lost business due to the pathetic lack of speed
- frequent doctor's visits and prescription medicines to deal with the stress and frustration of dealing with the biggest bunch of lying tossers on the planet.

So do the "improved" pricing seem a little less attractive now :)

and that's exactly why I'm still on dialup.
It may be practically useless, but atleast I still have some sanity left :D

I'm lucky if I get over 6Kb/s on international and usually I'm sitting around 3Kb/s. Slower than dialup and, according to Sentech, perfectly acceptable. They say that anything over 21k is acceptable contention!

It's simple: Sentech is the worst ISP in the country. Hands down. If you're on 256 or 512 than you get ok speeds (because of less contention). 128 sucks.

DON'T FALL FOR THE MARKETING - SENTECH SUCKS

Single thread intl wget (7mb file) still comes in at between 8-10kB average here. Lotsa spikes above and below that. Multithread or torrent 10-14kB, fairly consistent. Contention could be an issue, but maybe tower related rather than package related ?
