Hi All...

Having just had 1 notebook die and another killed by lightning... I am looking for any recommendations for around the R8500 mark.

hmmm...see if you can get that with a 64bit Os, pref windows 7 up or downgrade. Looks like a decent spec , only thing is with Vista Home ( 32 bit ) you will only use 3 of the 4 GB ram..and Vista sucks a$$....

Been selling a ton of demos/opened/old stock laptops lately, there are some really good bargains to be had depending on the reason for selling. PM me if you want a list....

Definately non Vista... Yes to 64bit Win 7! I like the 500GB HDD as standard!

Edit... Saaaay, if I order after the 22nd it should come with Windows 7... hmmmm....

I found a review of it on some Polish (I think) website. I'll post the link if I find it. Two problems they highlighted were poor battery life (1.5 hours), which might be fine, depending on how you use your laptop. The other thing is the 1280x800 resolution, which is a bit outdated but maybe not the end of the world. I'm going to wait until December and hope they bring out an updated version with higher resolution and obviously Windows 7. Speaking of which, I'm quite sure that this laptop comes with a Windows 7 coupon so you can get Windows 7 Professional for 'free' and I think you might be able to specify 64-bit when you order it. But let me know if you're going to buy this because I'm keen to know what it's like.

Hmmm... 1.5 hours not too great... 1280x800 is fine for me, my other two were the same plus I have multimonitor setup... so not a real problem...

Battery life not a deal-breaker... I like the 512MB dedicated Nvidia, I like the 500GB hDD, actually, the specs are top-notch! So, 1.5 hour battery I think I can live with...

On the other end of the scale... Makro have a Fujitsu on promotion at the moment for R4999.... not in the same league, but still a very good deal...

For the same price as the Gigabyte... I could get the Makro lappie with 2 TB external drives 3 year warranry AAAANNND a 20" LCD...

Tempting!

Well I'm selling my desktop computer to get a laptop, so I'm definitely not looking to still be using a monitor. And an internal 500GB is much better than an external... Speaking of which, the Gigabyte laptop also has eSata which will be very nice if you do get an external.

Go have a look at some HP (and other brands) laptops at amazon.com. They DO ship to SA and they are far cheaper in most instances. One was about half the price - R8000ish vs about R13000.

And the Gigabyte has a two year warranty, which is pretty decent.
