There was talk about this, but AFAIK there is no law that the plate must be metal. I think it has to do with how the plate is fastened to the car. You can't use velcro, for instance. :D

True. These brackets even have part numbers, so you can go to GM or Forsdicks or wherever and get a new one should the old one be broken.
 
I don't understand what was wrong with the old method. Double-sided stick & years later mines not even loose, let alone missing.

It is too easy if you would "want" it to "fall off" and then "accidentally" drive 200km/h in a 60km/h zone because you "forgot" it was 60kh/h....
 
my plate sometimes falls into my boot. I think I used fong kong velcro!

Nice point.

If only traffic would stop cars without plates. In Europe you wouldn't get 1/2 a KM before getting stopped.
 
What they need to fine people MORE on is :
Driving with fog lights on when there is no fog.
Driving with only park lights on in the rain.
Driving with missing plates (back or front).
Driving without seatbelts (although I enjoy seeing idiots not wearing seatbelts, we have enough idiots as it so please die soon).

What they need to fine people LESS on :
Speeding.

a bit of a double standard there Roux :D

I really dont have a problem with fog lights but its annoying when ppl dont turn on their lights at all.

I did not say stop speed fines, I just said less of them and more of the other.

Driving with your foglights switched on in clear conditions IS against the law. I think the fine should be on the spot "disablement" by means of a steel toe cap boot :D

quite true. someone sent me a list of fines per offence. apparently its only about R600 for one missing plate, but court appearance for both missing.

considering all my recent fines have got me pictured from the rear, it's cheaper to remove the rear plate only then pay for a 140km/h fine.

I understand its the law not to have the fogs on, but what i dont get is it aint interfering or obstructing my visibility. its not like driving with the brights/high beams on.

dont hate dude! besides i drive BMW(I know, I know). thinking of getting a GTi as well :D

Fog lights are HELLUVA interfering in the wrong conditions. On rainy days they sis so close to the wet and shiny black road they reflect and blind people. Rear fog lights (especially BMWs) are very bad on a clear night.

They are called FOG lights for a good reason you know.

Considering I am a good guy I will go to the nearest police station after I "accidentally" rammed my Land Rover into your M3/GTi ass to report the "accident". Ofcourse you don't have a plate there so I don't really know whom I "accidentally" rammed :p

i agree that the rear fog light is annoying. but not the fronts.
 
Why do people think that using fog lights is cool? Maybe it is the first car they had with this "feature" :)

Many people find the front ones just as annoying as the rear. Some cars are worse than others though.

perhaps. but dont u just love the angel eyes on some of the BM's. especially on the 5 series!
