New offside rule

I see many disallowed goals this season and of course controversy when a goal is / is not allowed.
I liked the previous version of the offside rule

All players should just be onside. That would be the simplest way to apply the rule. If they want to simplify the rule, that would be my suggestion.

The problem with that is that it would be too stop/start, and also would be a bit silly at times. For example, a player is coming back from an off-side position on the far left hand side of the field after a failed attack. His team regains position, but the ball is now on the opposite side (RHS). His team plays a ball over the defense for a player on the RHS to pick up. Because the player on the LHS is still in an off side position, play would be stopped, even though the offending player isn't anywhere near the action.

I think this new rule is really just clearing up the old one, and will work if implemented correctly by refs. It really isn't much different to the previous rule, just that if someone tries to play a ball in an off side position, but misses it, they should still be penalized for off sides, whereas previously it wasn't (or wasn't always clear if they touched the ball or not). Now it's clear: make an attempt to play the ball or obstruct a player in an off-side position, and it will be penalized.

That's one part. The part that I like is when a player that was offside makes no attempt to play the ball but then is in an advantageous position to shut down an opposing player or puts the ball carrier under pressure, will now be offside.

I wonder how much this will impact set-pieces. The teams will need to review their tactics to iron out possible penalties…

Wait how does that goal for Everton still stand? The ball was lifted over the defence looking for Lukaku - who is in a offside position... even though he didn't get the ball the ball was intended for him - because he couldn't get to the ball someone else runs in a retrieves the ball and scores... yes Mirallas is not offside but the intention to play the ball to Lukaku who was offside...

GOAL: Kevin Mirallas (Everton) v Manchester United, 26/04/15

This is pretty similar to the MATCH: Manchester United v Sunderland, 28/02/15 call where the player gain an advantage... what if Mirallas played the ball to Lukaku? Lukaku would have gained unfair advantage being in an offside position...

From 7min 40s

Lukaku stopped dead and did not interere with play or obstruct any opposition player. Mirallas ran onto the ball and played it. Once he was beyond Lukaku, Lukaku is onside again and is allowed to continue playing.

Because lukaku had no impact on the play. Being in an offside position isn't a foul, passing to an offside player isn't a foul, it's only a foul if the offside player gets the ball. If lukaku had received a pass from Mirallas later on, then play should have been stopped.

BUT you could also argue that Lukaku was an extra man for the defenders to cover thus allowing Mirallas to continue and score on his own, but from the video that wasn't the case.

GALLAGHER SAYS: Lukaku is in an offside position but stops and doesn’t affect the defender because the defender is on the wrong side of him. The ball goes through to Mirallas and he is allowed to continue. That was a goal last season and if it occurs again this season it will be a goal again. Lukaku has no impact on an opponent or the ball because it has gone straight over his head.

The key point is that Lukaku does not affect the defender ie no obstruction.

Besides, it's against United, so....:D

I think he does affect the defender (defender sees hes offside so he stops) but then again Valencia was poor in that situation.

That's just amateur defending. Even kids are taught to play to the whistle.
