New PC components

According to one of the articles it does not :( Hopefully they will fix it before releasing the thing.

There is not much advantages to the new chipset above the old except for extra PCI-e slots from what i can remember? And maybe PCI-e 2..?
They better add penryn quad compatability or else it will severely limit their sales.

Careful of a mobo with the 680i chipset. They do not play well with the new quad core intel 45nm chips so its possible that you will not be able to upgrade your cpu in future.

Hi, can someone explain this in simple terms to me, does it mean that the motherboard will not work with Quad core, and what other motherboard should I use.

I'm sorry I posted it like a million times, my connection was bad, and coupled with irritation, I clicked many a time.

Oops. Meant to add that the QX9550 probably isn't available locally. Just thought anyway. :)

And an irritating piece of info for those who've upgraded to the X38 chipset for futureproofing, apparently (hardwaresecrets.com) this chipset doesn't support the as yet unreleased QX9770... You'll need to upgrade to the also as yet unreleased X48 chipset.

@kortel
The 680i chipset supports the current Quad Core CPUs, such as the Q6600 you've chosen, but not the new 45nm ones.

The mobo will work with present quads but will not work with the new quads out in Jan (Penrynn - spelling) ie at present the best chip that can be run on that board is a QX6850 afaik

Intel and Nvidia sem to be having a bun fight over sli chipsets for the newer chips and no one knows when it will be sorted out, 780i may not even come out :p

Hmmm, triple post. To delete a post, go to Edit -> Go Advanced -> Delete this message :)

From what I understand, only the 45nm dual cores will work on the 680i chipset, but not the 45nm quad cores.

That motherboard will work 100% with the CPU that you chose.

BUT

If you decide to upgrade a few months from now you will not be able to upgrade to another faster quad core CPU because Intel will be selling a new "version" of the quad cores that the 680i motherboard can not handle.

The X38 is the newest chip from intel that will work with the new cpu versions and it seems pretty decent but I dunno if its got SLI

Anyone else know of a specific high end motherboard thats 45nm compatible?

EDIT: Geez u okes are fast. 4 posts since me hitting the "post reply" button. Or maybe im just slow today.. argh its almost weekend.

If the 780i is not expected to handle 45nm Penryns then that rules out SLi for me. A bit of a shame as it will remove one of my planned upgrade paths.

Could wait for the 790i's according to some rumours they will support the quads.

tbf i am not much of a gamer so SLi probably will not be a route I follow. If I don't go Sli, I'll probably go 8800GT, then midrange next gen when that starts to fall off the pace (which is when I might have gone SLi to hold off).

I personally would consider investing in a console for gaming. Yes you can build a powerful computer that would last you approximately a year before some components in them become obsolete, at a heavy price...or you could purchase a console for which games are made.

The gaming industry is a fickle thing. In the PC community, games are made to promote new components, in the console community, games are specifically made that would work on the console. Yes they do become obsolete after a few years, but at the price it's better value in my opinion. And you get more years out of the same components for games.

Good point. I have been thinking about this for a long time and will be getting the PS3 next year when the prices drop a bit. No more updating drivers and patching windows for me :)

Its becoming a bit pointless to order hardware for 25k just to realise that its obsolete by the time that its delivered to the house.

Also, its as if the developers move way too fast. Stuff doesnt even work properly on the current generation but then they already move to the next.

We are being bombarded by sub standard incomplete ****(games) that just look pretty.

And then you wait a few years and then you have to buy a PS4 because they'll stop making games for the PS3 ;)

I prefer PCs, personally, but I wouldn't mind having a console as well. :)

Same, but i dont feel like paying R600 for a game either.
