Hey Guys.

Merry Xmas first of all!!!

I have finally convinced my bro to get another PC as his is an old school Celeron with an FX5200 card.

I need some ideas.

I was thinking of the following...

Mobo - BIOSTAR TPower I45 LGA 775 R 1500
Processor -Intel Core2 Quad Q8300 - R 1550
Ram - 2gigs Corsair DDR2 800 R 600
Graphics Card Club3d 4850 1gig R 1350

What do you guys think?
He bascially wants to play some COD 4 and 6, watch some HD movies.

What do you think?
Good Combo or not?

Thanks!

Up the Ram to 4gb (or 3gb).

When it comes to ram I believe in quantity over quality if you don't have the money.

But what do I know...

up the graphics card if its possible, save him from spending too soon on an upgrade. Although the 4850 should have no problem running those games.

I noticed that you havnt allocated anything towards a power supply unit

Case is an old one but will work.
PSU is 450w. Runs an 8800GTX so should be ok for the time being.

With that 3grand you allocated to processor and motherboard you can get a phenom 2 955 3.2Ghz quad and an ecs black series 780g board which will give you much better performance and you won't be tied to a dying platform.

Sorry for the double post but with the money you allocated for a 4850 you could add R100 and get a 5750 which would give slightly better performance and you'll have dx11.

He is not loyal at all to AMD or Intel.
I need to know the best I can get for the cheapest.

It will be PURELY for gaming and Movies. NO Photoshop, CAD or other apps.

Reason why im asking is that he would like to get it ASAP.
I usually go for the top end stuff but he doesnt care at all.
If i needed to build a top of the range system, id know exactly what to get.

Any help would be great.

Thanks. See this is the kind of thing that i need to know!

If the main purpose of this pc is gaming, go for an AMD and then you'll have money left over for a better graphics card/psu

Otherwise add a few extra bucks (0.5k or so) and get an i5. Lga775 is on it's way out, i wouldn't build a new pc based on lga775.

Well prophecy.co.za has the 955 for 1700 or 1800 and a ecs black board is about a grand.

In gaming it performs like an i7 920 sometimes beating it. In other applications it's just behind.

Go with a Gigabyte G31 motherboard, about R500. What you save there you can use to up the ram and GPU. There is no need for an expensive motherboard like you listed with features you are not going to use.

You should also be able to get Kingston DDRII-800 ram for about R400 per 2GB stick.

All the Drives etc are in place. Its just Ram, cpu, mobo and a card. The rest is pretty much sorted :)

Let's see now...

Mobo: ASRock G41M-S - R410
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 - R1380
RAM: Corsair DDR2-800 2GB (2x1GB) - R600
Graphics Card: Sapphire Game Edition Radeon HD5770 - R2090

The prices are from Sybaritic, I just redistributed the funds a bit. Could somebody hook us up with an AMD equivalent?
