Another question, can you use 8gb of ram with the i7 still in tri mode? Like 6gb in tri + 2gb? Thanks

PostmanPot, are you SURE that the motherboard will still run the RAM in tripple channel when you have 3x2GB + 1x2GB installed?
My guess would be that it would run in single channel mode!

Yes, quite sure.

How do you reckon it will run in tripple channel? Will it run the first 6GB in tripple channel and then the 6-8GB section in single channel?

Also, would this apply only for the MSI X58A-GD65 or will my Asus P6T Deluxe v2 motherboard do the same (run 8GB in tripple channel)?
Reason why I'm asking is, because I can take my office PC's RAM home tonight and actually TEST it!

AFAIK if DIMMs A1, B1 & C1 are running the same RAM, then a single stick in DIMM A2 will not stop A1, B1 & C1 running in triple channel.

That's my understanding, from Asus manuals. Can't comment on MSI.

Could you perhaps tell us why you want to use 8GB on a socket 1366 motherboard?

Please note that everything that PostmanPot and I said earlier today was w.r.t. 4x 2GB sticks and NOT 2x 4GB sticks.

I simply want more ram than 6gb and dont have the money to buy 12gb, so i thought that 2gbx4 will maybe give me tri +single? I will be using the pc for editing and Photoshop eats RAM for breakfast.

Donno if you have decided on a motherboard, but the GIGABYTE X58A-UD3R is the best value for money and if you look at recommended rigs, this baby pops up more often than not.

Uhm, why would you want to pay R500 more for a motherboard with the same features, when you can get a MSI X58A-GD65 for under R2000 !

AFAIK, the 2x PCIe 16x slots running @ 16x are the PCI slots #2 & #6 on that MSI motherboard, which is a very nice gap (3x PCIe slots) for running cards in SLI/CF.
AFAIK the 2x PCIe 16x slots running @ 16x on the Gigabyte motherboard doesn't have a gap between them (only 1 PCIe slot).

What happend to Prophecy, their i7 950 went up from 2500 to over 2900? Wootware retails for R 2,596.00.

wow that is odd that the i7 950 increased to R2900 again!

Anyway, Nicko, sorry about my previous post if it was a bit harsh.
I might be wrong about that MSI X58A-GD65 motherboard's PCI-e 16x @ 16x slot placements. It could be the same as the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R one. Here you can see an overview of the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R motherboard's PCIe x16 @ 16x and 8x arrangement.

PostmanPot, you were actually 100% about the 8GB RAM working in tripple channel! See Page 2-8 & Page 2-9 of the MSI motherboard's manual with regards to memory population.

Luckily they are R 2,596.00 at wootware. It is great news about the 8gb and tri.

I agree with Pada in going for the full 12GB if you can scrape the funds together.

Best to buy matched sets of RAM (they are tested together to ensure they work together, before being packaged). RAM prices are also low at the moment, so it's a good time to buy.
