Hey all.

Im not sure if this is the right section to post this but here it goes anyway.

Ok, ive been looking to get a new PC but i have been away for quite some time. So ive kinda lost track with the specs of gfx cards, CPU's etc. Ive tried searching for PC's online but most of them are pre-built and the specs mean really nothing to me...i dont know if that will run Crysis or solitare...

Now the problem i have is that the fast expensive PC's are too expensive and the cheaper PC's are too cheap, i want something in the middle but i dont have a clue how or where to find that.

Any help would be great.
Thanks

the cheap PC's i saw were around 10k. the Expensive were around 20k.

Ive lost track of specs and how much they should cost. How much you think a PC would cost that could run most games out there today smoothly?

You can get away with 7-10k for a decent middle range PC (just the box).

Start by looking at pcint.co.za and prophecy.co.za. Then work out something which +- fits your idea of a PC and then post that here. Its easier to advise when there is a starting point.

I'd go for something based on an q6600 and a 4850...

ive heard dual core is better for gaming atm...so should i go for dual or quad?

k im off to work... ill search when i get back and post what i find.

Thanks alot for the help

A decent box with a mid-ranged (9600GT maybe) GFX and a Core 2 Duo will set you back R10k without any fancy stuff. This is enough to play Crysis on 80% graphics.
There is a huge issue between Core2 Duo and Quad Core atm but Quad Core is just not fully utilisable yet. I'd still go for the Core 2 Duo from a professional perspective.
Something nice to go for that will cost under R10k:
Intel Dragontail motherboard (cannot overclock though, but performs very well)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz 6MB
Seagate 500GB SATA2
550W PSU (around R500)
Nice case (210mm wide)
9600GT 512MB
2x2GB DDR2 800MHz Corsair low latency
DVD-Writer
This setup is around R7500 for the box.

You could also get yourself a motherboard (Gigabyte, not Asus, which is nice but has poor service in SA) and overclock your CPU if you feel like it (the CPUs are really safe to O/C these days without any issues at all).
The Q6600 is a really decent Quad Core CPU, costs around R100-R200 more than the E8500 and for non-quad core applications runs at 2.4GHz instead of 3.16GHz which I suppose ain't too bad.
The Q6600 has been clocked safely on air (fan, not water-cooled) at3.5GHz so for safety's sake it can go to let's say 3GHz...

My friend got the following just now.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
ASUS P5Q-E
2 Gig RAM
Sapphire ATI Radeon 4850
Case
250Gig HDD

This PC plays everything perfectly. Cost about R7500

Although 4GB is preferable and will save RAM headaches later on. Only costs like R400 more to have 2x2GB.

Yeah...i need to up my mem to 4 GB as well even though i am running a 32-bit OS.

I really like that sound of this here but ill get more RAM.

Now the only thing is getting the damn thing...I live in a small town so cant actually buy anything here. Did your friend buy online?

I can confirm that the Q6600 can be overclocked to 3GHz with stock cooling and stock voltages  :D
