New PC Issue: Power cuts when switched on.

Hey there. :)

I recently purchased new computer parts from a local online retailer. I ordered the following:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE B75M-D3H, all-in-one LGA1155, Intel B75, 4x dual channel.
PSU: Corsair CX500 V2, 500w (12v : 408w), Eps12V, ATX 12V V2.3, 24pin.
Case: Cooler Master Elite 240, Mid Tower, Black with Mirror Finish + B.
HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002, 500GB, SATA6G , 7200rpm, 16mb cache.
DVD: LG GH22NS50, 22x SATA, black with extra beige bezel.
CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K, 3.4GHz, LGA1155, Quad Core (with 4 threads)
RAM: Team TXD34096M1600HC9-D, Xtreem Dark with black heatsinks, 4GB. (2 sticks)

A friend and I assembled it this evening. My friend has done it before and we also referred to the user manuals when we weren't sure of something. When we were finished we attempted to put the PC on, but every time we try it goes on for 2-3 seconds and then just cuts out. All the fans and lights start up and then cut out. We tried unplugging few things that aren't needed for the PC to start up, but the same thing happens. We also tried using a different power supply cable, the same thing happens. I am guessing it is either the PSU or motherboard.

Does someone perhaps know what could cause this to happen, and how it could be solved? Also the retailer is located in Joburg and I am in Cape Town. Just want to find exactly what could be wrong before sending parts back for testing.

Is the CPU and CPU heatsink/fan seated properly?

Does the POST show or does it die before showing anything?
 
Its either a faulty PSU or motherboard or something shorted out.

Or, far more likely, you may have switched around the Power and Rest button cables.
 
Take the RAM out and put it back in, making sure it is properly secured. Try with each stick one at a time, too. You can also try the other 2 slots for a dual-channel setup and test with different RAM.
 
Sorry dude, that sucks. Nothing worse than getting brand spanking new gear, only to be disappointed when it doesn't work.

To me it sounds like a problem with the PSU:
- Make sure you have selected the correct voltage input settings (220-240khz)
- Disconnect the motherboard and all other cards/devices. Power on the PSU alone, and see if it cuts out.
- If the PSU seems to be the problem, try a different PSU from an older PC, or borrow one from somewhere/someone. PSUs are relatively cheap - you could just buy one to test and keep it as spare.
- If the PSU doesn't seem to be the problem, then re-connect one item/card/device at a time, and see what happens. Try to find the culprit.

It could also be a problem with the case - the power buttons and card at the front of the PC (for power button, USB, Audio, etc) could be faulty.
 
I've had a similar issues on quite a few occasions.

Your best bet is to remove everything and just have your motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler,
Power supply, power switch, and PC Speaker/buzzer connected
(Don't even have ram in the machine).

If the machine powers up, (with or without a beep code), you can rule out the power
supply as the problem, in which case there's a 99% chance it's the motherboard.
 
I know how you feel - I upgraded my workstation recently and almost died when nothing worked after spending closed to R8k!

All the suggestions provided above are valid so please try them. In my particular case I found that the ATX power cord and connector were the culprit. Its the black 24 pin (i think) power connector that powers up the motherboard. If you are using and extension cable to reach your motherboard connector from the power supply (which I doubt judging by the case) then double check the connection point in the extension.

Another common one is a loose power connector cable specifically for your CPU - located close to the CPU either 4 / 6 PIN.

Wiggle them about and ensure that they are making contact. The connectors are not the most robust these days...there is hope hang in there! ;)

Sounds like this is the prob to me :) just make sure you have both motherboard power connectors seated correctly.
 
Thanks for the reply guys. We did try and power the PSU up separate from the other parts. It didn't to start up at all. The PSU has a weird 2-pin power cable though. We also disconnected numerous parts and put it back one at a time, the problem persisted throughout.

The power connection which powers the CPU, is it the ATX 12V 4-pin block near the CPU? We read in the user manual that without that connection, the PC will not start up. But there was no power connection that fitted, i.e. no 4-pin power connection. So at present, that isn't connected. But would that really cause the power to cut out? The friend that was helping me checked his PC and he also doesn't have it connected, i7 system.

Check that you don't have some of the motherboard stand things in that should not be in.
Those small screws that you put into your case that the motherboard sits on, sometimes if you have one screwed in that should not be in it will short out.

Your PSU doesn't have the ATX 12V 4pin plug on it?

^^ That's literally impossible these days. OP, are you sure you're just not looking at the right cable? The 4-pin connector HAS to be plugged in, there's no two ways about it.

According to the PSU manual, there is a 8pin CPU power connector (EPS12V):

"The EPS12V power connector has a detachable 4-pin mechanism in order to
support either an 8-pin socket or a 4-pin “P4/12V” socket on the motherboard."
 
I will recheck, but we didn't find anything resembling the pin socket type.

We thought that was the issue, but my friend checked his system and it wasn't plugged in. This lead me to believe that something else might be wrong.

Would the 12V pin not being connected cause the motherboard to cut out though?

Its probably the most important plug on your mobo.
 
Take that 8 pin CPU connector, and split it in half (yes it can be done, just look closely), then plug it into the 4 pin power socket on the motherboard. Problem solved (hopefully)
