Building a new pc, not too sure about new intel chips , graphics cards etc, havnt paid attention to specs forever, atm most parts will be sourced from Sahara however if you have better alternatives just shout.

Speakers and LCD will be salvaged from old machine, need idea of a decent casing as well.

Thanks
J

If at all possible rather buy the GeForce 8800GT instead. Otherwise, looks good. :) Planning on running 64-bit operating systems, are you?

Planning on using my old amd k6-2 550 mhz as a surveilance system - dont know if thats too low, otherwise its becoming music/tv machine.

Then my old 1.2ghz amd is becoming a kubuntu monkey and well the new machine I dont know prolly 64 bit vista and any 64 bit flavours of the linux to see what it can do.

Beanie is that overclockable at any point or do I have incorrect mboard to attempt that? I dont know foxconn at all and I must admit i just randomly selected it off the pricelist :P a bit more research is going to have to be done :P but yeah what would options for overclocking be?

Thanks
J

If I may, rather spend your money on a better brand of RAM. The one you're looking at buying has high latency and coupled with a 8800GT, will do the rest of your system no justice. Look out for well priced OCZ or Team RAM, they won't be as cheap as the ones above but will pack a better punch overall.

You ought to be able to reach 3GHz per core easily :) I'm not a huge Foxconn fan myself, but it should work just fine.

As Thestealth said, better RAM will help quite a lot. Corsair ValueSelect RAM is also an option (very nice RAM) which is available from Rectron I believe.

Thanks for the help guys, the more technically minded of you , can you please recommend a decent mobo that will support quad core and the new quad core, read something about 45mm chips or some such.

Not a big fan of foxconn either, infact i've never ever owned one, but if its anything like msi i dont want to touch it, i'm a gigabyte person, any good gigabyte or asus mboards?

Casing/Ram could you please provide me some links, what kind of PSU would i need to power the rig etc? Sorry I kind of fell out the tech race about the time of my last upgrade, amd athlon xp 2600+ (1.2 ghz :P) so you can see its been a while since i actively bothered to do my research :P... will prices drop in January or increase, bearing in mind im probably going to be buying from dealers mainly and maybe 1-2 parts from reputable etailers such as nivo,prophecy,sybaratic,take2.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Happy Holidays

I like the Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard which uses the NVIDIA 650i chipset. There have been rumors about it supporting/not supporting the new 45nm quad core CPUs, guess we'll just have to wait and see. PC International usually have stock.

Any decent 400W+ power supply should be fine for powering the rig, just make sure it's from a reputable brand.

Feel free to PM me :)

I quite like MSI, problem free with them so far. Foxconn is worse than them though. All of the P35 chipset Gigabyte boards is quite good, so you can't go wrong there. Same with Asus

Asus P5K vanilla (vdroop pencil mod) working fine for me with a Q6600, 1400 from sybaritic i think. Will be compatible with next years 45nm quads :)

Rubbish, that Ram is Hynix and is perfectly good. Keep that ram dude, it's cheap, and you won't notice a difference unless you want to OC in synch with the FSB. Otherwise take the other dudes' suggestions.

I've heard that I should buy gaming ram or ram that I can overlock, when will I ever notice the diff in normal performance wrt latency? When will it and when wont it make a diff?

4gb hynix vs 2gb more expensive ram, who wins in terms of performance?

Thanks
J

You will not notice the diff. unless you run benchmarking applications and compare the scores visually.

Hynix 4GB.

Any place to buy a decent case?
Websites with pics would be good, need to source one in the cpt area , have access to Sahara and Rectron if they have anything decent, any ideas? - something with a handle would be cool.

Thanks
J

Like the idea of having onboard vga as a spare, so this kind of rules this and gbyte out of the question, so this board kinda of loses out, dont know if it supports new 45mn either....

Is this last board SLI friendly? and 5.1 audio as to 8 channel, how is this going to affect me if im doing gaming, maybe some video editing etc? Does it just mean that max onboard sound can support is 5.1 or 8? Is this intel G33 + iCH9 chipset as overclockable as the Intel P35 + iCH9 chipset?

This board looks to be the one im after, also its been confirmed to do 45nm , so thats snazzy, worth it not worth it, i think this would probably be my choice unless new boards hit in end dec/ early jan...

Which board would you recommend , im a gigabyte fan - would it be worth waiting till jan for price reductions or???

Generally boards with onboard vga do not oc very well, there are presently no P5K boards that can be sli'd (nvidia/intel issues) you need the 680i series for sli.
