Ok so i recently bought a gbyte GA-P35-DS3L and q6600 with 4gb ddr2 800 and 8400gs (yes I know **** card for the moment but im poor and will keep it till 9 series comes out). 320gb Seagate HDD, Liteon DVD writer and 460w Gbyte PSU.

My problem is this - everything is assembled fine from what I can see CPU/Heatsink fine, ram fine, gpu fine, yet I cant seem to get the pc to boot when I try short the pw+ pw- pins as im currently lacking a case due to shipping issues.

Now sometimes when i attempt to short those pins i get 1 really quite short beep then other times i try I get nothing, cant see any LED on mboard indicating power - dont even see ref in mboard to such so I dont even know if model has one.

Doubt it could be shorting as its situated on a wooden panel resting on its anti static bag - any ideas of what could cause this, abs no power cpu fan doesnt go on or anything just 1 short beep then nothing and seems that beep cant be replicated all the time I sometimes have to leave it for a few mins and it might beep again it might not.

Any ideas?
Thanks
J

Try follow my suggestions in here re: the additional power connector!

This task is not all that difficult. I suggest you carefully follow each cable/connector and then power up. Have you assembled a PC before?

it isnt an anti-static bag in the way you think it is, the thing is very good at carrying electricity.

maybe, perhaps, take it off the METAL SHIELDED BAG.

and make sure your 2x2 connector is plugged in (to the rest of you, that is the yellow+black wired 4 white connector near the cpu)

No this is far from my first pc assembly, however it is my first pc assembly with a chassis :P

yest I had both power connecters in - problem doesnt lie there, will try it without resting on bag.

Would have just swapped PSU if I had one spare lying around but I dont so I guess i'll just tweak a bit.

Thanks

The task is indeed difficult when something is faulty - removed everything bit by bit , gpu , ram , cpu is next - still i get the small almost inaudible beep maybe every 1-10 times I try start the machine - No fans come to life nothing , either on cpu or on psu.

You started another thread I see, anyway:

Firstly this issue is a short, a PC that immediately shuts down is the PSU powering down in a short circuit/over current situation (assuming it shuts down in +-1 second or less), I've seen it a few times before, the most common being as follows:

1) The connectors are in the wrong way round
2) Motherboard is damaged causing a short
3) PSU is damaged causing a short
4) CPU is physically damaged or in the wrong way (have seen a CPU forced in the socket the wrong way round, bent pins and all)
5) RAM is physically damaged (causes a short)

Any type of physical damage that causes a short can cause the symptoms, it's basically the motherboard or PSU immediately cutting power to prevent damage/ more damage to the components.

You should only have the following connected for first power up:

CPU
RAM
Motherboard
GPU
PSU

Exactly how long does it take to power down and when it does beep it happens immediately? If that is the case not only do you have short issue you also have a hardware issue, beeps = BIOS error codes such as bad RAM/CPU/GPU/etc. Or it could be that device that is causing the short.

Connectors for power are in right way, CPU went in 1st time no issues , fits perfect. Beep happens maybe 1 in 10 when I try short pw+pw- for power - no fans power on or anything its like 1 inaudible beep then nothing then shorting pins doesnt make a beep for a while - will take everything off and start again in the hopes I can figure it out , have checked psu cables, taken gpu off, reseated ram, now I guess ill just play with cpu and see what happens. I personally think psu is busted somewhat.

Thanks

stock heatsink takes 5 seconds to remove nothing difficult about it :p

Is when 2 unclip like they are supposed to after 1/4 turn anti clockwise - but the other two dont pudge and you are sweating and swearing like a sailor because it wont unclip - common problem according to google :P
