New PC Speakers

No. Don't use 5.1. Most audio (99%) was mixed with stereo in mind. Adding more speakers to the mix ruins this original recording, And adds nothing to the experience. So why waste the money? It's a farce I tell you!

I agree with you on that, and you should probably switch to stereo on the AVR, but 5.1 sounds better and louder on my AVR than just using 2 speakers.

As for the actual use of 5.1, I kind of enjoyed GTA V in this mode.

Im sure it does, but for the same money you could have got a stonking stereo or 2.1 system that would have sounded just as loud, or louder, while having better stereo imaging etc and clarity.

i also replaced my trusty creative 2.1 set up 2 weeks back - my 1st choice was that harmon kardon (sp) sound sticks but i eventually went for a samsung 5.1 home theatre set - game had one on special

here's the link on takealot:

(1000w as well)

i'm using the optical out from my pc to this and seems decent enough - i must confess i've left out the 2 satelite speakers and only installed the tall boys with the sub - will finish the setup once my new plasma stand arrives but that being said it sounds pretty decent as is.

only thing that irritates me is that the main dvd is just that dvd not bluray :( but all my media is off my pc so i guess it doesnt really matter in my case.

Edit: BTW that tall boys are height adjustable and not very "tall" at all so perfect for small spaces.

Lol, no, it really isn't, no matter what the stickers say.

OP, +1 on the amp and bookshelves suggestion, if you have budget left over grab a small USB DAC to use instead of your soundcard, will sound 100x better.

Haha, yeah, there is no way that thing will pull 1kw. Simply no way. If you read through the tech specs, it usually mention operating power consumption or something. Due to the fact that no amp is 100% efficient, it will probably only turn about 75% of the power it draws into amplified wattage.

According to http://www.samsung.com/za/consumer/tv-av/audio-video/home-entertainment-system/HT-F453HK/XA

The system draws 68.9W when under its operational load, so assuming 75% of that is converted to audio signal, we can assume the system can only produce 51.6W. Now that's a pretty conservative estimate, so it probably makes even less. And to think they advertise a 1000w.... Jeeez. Sorry to burst your bubble mate :P.

If you actually want 1000w you're going to have to invest in one of these. This will actually give you something in that ballpark. And it weighs 15kg. I have one for my home theatre and its great!

OP check here:

http://www.avforums.co.za/index.php?topic=54998.0

Active monitors on stands, add in a stand alone DAC(contact these blokes, http://www.tuerkmusic.co.za/index.php/pages/single/retail-stores-jhb and ask for a "Korg 100m", should be R1000 and it's amazing) down the line and you're sorted.

That amp is hardly Hi-Fi, for genuine Hi-Fi at 1000W you're looking at R80k+ easy

What is genuine hifi? Please explain, because I can't hear you over all the marketing BS that surrounds this subject :)

I can understand paying more will improve the sound quality, but really, you aren't going to convince me to sell my car to buy an amp, when this one is certainly good enough. Especially since in blind testing, most people won't tell the difference.

An amp designed for home hifi use, not a professional sound reinforcement amp. They have completely different design philosophies and uses, and yes the difference between disco and hifi amps are very audible.

Now I'm not suggesting buying massively expensive amps because you're right they're mainly a bunch of nonsense but a secondhand 100W proper hifi amp will cost about the same as that and outperform it in sound by a good margin. Anything above a genuine 200W or so is pointless in a home hifi/HT setup, the speakers simply can't handle it. And if you do have speakers that can handle or even need that amount of power(B&W top range etc) they'll be well over 100k a set and driving them with a disco amp is sacrilege;)

I agree with most of what you are saying, but for R3.5k that amp was the best thing on the market imo. Nothing even second hand could touch it power wise (that's a given) But i was also blown away by its sound quality. Seriously, these things are underrated. The basic design of a PA amp lends itself quite well to a hifi amp actually. The parts need to be indestructible, it almost never distorts. It never gets hot, it can take balanced inputs. Back in the day, you would be right. But these modern PA amps deliver serious bang for buck, and you don't have to compromise on quality. I've A/B'd it with powerful vintage amps (a modded quad 405) and there wasn't much in it. The older amp was smoother, but you would hardly tell. And its four times the price.
