Hi guys, last week I decided to sell my old pc and buy a new one, because I wanted something that would perform better (in COD2 online).

Anyways, I got my new pc, installed my OS, updated my Nvidia drivers (v81.98 for a 7800GTX) , and started playing Call Of Duty 2.

However, after two days of working perfectly, I tried getting onto a server, my pc connected, and when it had to load the map, it stopped in the middle of loading (almost as if it forgets to load), and then the game was "not responding".

I thought it was COD2, re-installed it, but had the same problem.
This has happened again to me today while installing a Acrobat reader 8, but after "hanging" for a few minutes, it finished installing and everything was fine.

It's as if my pc forgets to complete the loading of the app when it's in the middle of it.
This happens about 50% of the time I try to load something big. (It has happened that windows loads for 2-3 minutes upon startup as well.)

I don't know what's wrong, so I'll try to give all the relevant information :

I've got an ASUS M2N4-SLI mobo, AMD 5200+
2GB Hynix Ram (yeah, I know..)
new SATA HDD - with a partition for Windows.

etc etc. Only thing not new on this pc is an extra HDD, and the 7800GTX.

I used the ASUSUpdate app to update my bios, but it just connected to the server and nothing happened - could it be that the BIOS is partially updated?
Have any of you had the same problems or know what I should do to fix it?

P.S. - Not relevant to my problem above : I've got a SATA DVD-RW aswell as 2 SATA HDD's, and I have the option to "safely remove hardware" all of the above??? Is that normal?

SATA drives shouldn't get on the "safely remove hardware" list...

btw, are you sure 81.98 are the latest drivers for your card? Not that it would be related to your problem though.

Have you messed with disabling a lot of services? I had something almost similar..

Services like?

Only other thing I've done is to download a few windows updates...
I tried entering my Bios and loading the fail-safe defaults, but it didn't work.
Do you guys think this might be fixed if I re-install Windows? Or could it be a hardware error?

Sometimes the Windows Updates can mess things up. It can be alot of things but I would suggest format and reinstall and then see if its still doing the same. If yes it's hardware/bios if not it was software

The fact that everything was working fine for the first few days leads me to think it must be software, so I'll re-install tomorrow and give feedback..

Does anybody know why my pc gives me the option to "safely-remove" my SATA HDD's and SATA DVD-RW???

This is very annoying, because everytime I enter COD2, it tells me : "Your pc seems to have changed since the last time you ran COD2, would you like the game to auto-configure?"

i also get the option to safely remove my c: (a SATA2 drive)
What firewall do you have? it might that these apps are all trying to access the net and then timing out... I had to disable the hardware firewall on my Asus mobo because it was randomly allowing then denying network access to certain programs.

So, if you "safely" removed that drive and it has your Winodws install on it, then your PC dies at the same time? Ingenious....

My SATA2 drive doesn't bring up any list btw, I don't think most do..

Frag I can't quite remember the offending service, mostly because I like to really streamline my Windows installs, but when you do the re-install (I'd recommend it..) then leave everything alone so that you can be sure it isn't cause by anything you're doing.

a while ago i also setup a computer with an Asus mobo, in windows it also had that 'safely remove hardware' option with the c drive, i guess it's something to do with the SATA ports being hot swappable... anyways, just to see what'd happen, i tried to do the 'safely remove hardware' thing on the c drive, but nothing happend...

The thing about this is that every game keeps picking up that my "pc have changed" since it last ran, and then wants to reconfigure itself... It's VERY annoying...

I use the standard Windows Firewall ATM.
Is there an option in the Bios to disable the hardware firewall?
I honestly didn't even know the mobo has its own firewall..

Anyways, I'm gonna re-install Windows after I get home from my exam, will let you all know if I get sorted...
Thanks for the help thus far.

it's the via drivers giving this option to safely remove the c drive, but you cant, even if you try.

they have removed this option in the newest update, if i remember correctly. stop panicking:-)

My pc does it to.add sata to safely remove devices. But i never had any problem with my pc he load games just fine.Or anything else for that matter.
If u ask me maby u should consider formating your pc and see if it still freezes.if it does freeze after a format and a install of just the required software like drivers without any windows update or stuff like that.u will know it is not a software problem. But i think it is cos as u said u had no problems 1st 2 days.

Have u try to just update your pc drivers??u could try that as well if not already did;)

OK, I've re-installed (with some major HDD problems), and after installing COD2 and the 93.71 drivers(final drivers for 7800GTX).

I ran COD2 , and it loaded the map OK but then the pc just rebooted(first throwing a blank screen)???
I pressed the reset button, only to be greeted by four sounds from the mobo - 1 long one followed by three short ones...

What does this sounds mean? (One long followed by three short ones??)
If it's relevant, I've got the ASUS M2NE-SLi mobo???

What could be the problem?
I ran the game under normal settings, didn't even the Nvidia settings after rebooting...

Thanks guys...(Nice to be in the company of people more clever than myself...)

why was it an issue to install windows.. my computer used to do that with my old HDD that was giving up when it had windows on it. It like resets itself then tries to continue what its doing which can take a minute...

But those Beeps are either graphics card or ram :) my motherboard tells me what failed so i can't remember the beeps :)

why was it an issue to install windows..?
LOOOONG STORY...
Well, I bought myself a new 500GB SATA2 HDD, and already had a 250GB SATA HDD.
The SATA2 drive should be quicker, so first time I installed Windows, I created a 16GB partition for Windows and a big 450GB for storage...(On the 500GB)
I copied some of my important data to the 450GB...
When I had te re-install, I wanted to format (not delete) the Windows partition and just re-install it, keeping my data on the 450GB obviously...(I usually re-installed Windows in this way on my 250GB)
So I inserted my Windows CD, it loaded, but when it came to where I should choose on which drive to install, there was just the usual 131000MB unpartitioned space... I decided I wanted to backup my most important documents on my 250GB again, but when I rebooted (having done NOTHING), my 500GB with windows and the other partition was just GONE...
I drove to a local pc-shop, borrowed an old 20GB HDD, installed Windows on it to try and recover my data, but the only option I had in disk management was to format my 500GB...
So I lost all my data...
And all my music...
(Luckily I had some DVD backups of the most important stuff..)

But those Beeps are either graphics card or ram :) my motherboard tells me what failed so i can't remember the beeps :)
Nice mobo :)
Is there a website or something I could check out that'll tell me what the problem is?

:) Thanx... LOL

1long, 3short No video card or bad video RAM
My mobo gave me this error codes only twice, (after I've tried to play COD2 - and I got a black-screen followed by a restart)
However, if I try to play COD now, I still get the black screen(after about 2 seconds of playing...)
The weirdest thing for me is how this all could be happening at the same time...
Just two days ago my screencard was working fine, but the maps just stopped loading, now the screencard is bad, dunno about the HDD...

Anyways, (think I'm asking too many questions-lol)...
What should I do now?
How would I be certain that there's something wrong with my screencard?
The 7800GTX I have is from Gigabyte (bought it second-hand last week), and it's still under its three year warranty...
It was bought from Rectron JHB, and I'm in Bloem - if there is indeed something wrong with it, can I take it to Rectron Bloem with the receipt or MUST the original buyer take it back to Rectron Jhb?

Only way is to try another GFX card.

@Frag:

I think there's a fairly good chance you can get your data back. Try to get a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD, and then run a utility called TestDisk. It should (hopefully) be able to recover your MFT. There are also other utilities that may work as well. If you can't read your drive at all - you have nothing to lose.....

I have also had some serious issues with Windows and NTFS just trashing the MFT when adjusting partitions. Currently moving away from Windows for this and other reasons....
