Right, my Vodacom contract is just about to expire and I'm looking at getting a new phone. The two phones that I have had my eyes on are the Iphone 3G S and the Samsung i7500, both which have pretty good specs. A few things that I find essential would be speed, gps, wifi, storage, voip, camera, and hackability as I do not mind playing around with phone software to get certain things working...

Can anyone recommend a good phone that will last some time, and has good specs / features.

Thanks

I'm probably going to get shot down here... :p

I have a Nokia 5800 XM. I'll break it down using your pre-reqs.

Speed: The latest firmware made a huge difference to the speed of the phone, and it is very usable.

GPS: Yes, please. I have used Nokia Maps 2.0 (6 month Walk & Drive licence included), the new Ovi Maps, and Garmin XT. All lovely, usable, touch-enabled, and responsive.

wifi: Yes please. Grouped with internet, as I have, as higher priority than 3G. Works well, as expected.

storage: Comes with an 8GB microSD card.

voip: I have Nimbuzz running on it, which supports Skype. It uses S60v5 OS, so pick your app.

camera: 3.2MP, Carl Zeiss lens. Not the best part of the phone, but in good light, you get good pics.

hackability: S60 version 5 OS. Java. Flash Lite. Widgets. Oh yes, hackability is there.

Extras you may not be so bothered about? Touch UI, excellent stereo speakers (the best on any phone, IMO), 16:9 resolution (640x360x16M) is higher than the iPhone... HSDPA... did I miss anything?

For hacking you should look at WinMo and Android only imo. Getting the HTC Hero ROM onto a Magic seems to be the thing to do right now. WinMo has always been the hackers first choice.

I'd definitely recommend Symbian software too! Either version 3 or the new 5 (not that I have had exposure to this but I assume it has the same "hackability")

I've been a longtime Symbian user and hackibility isn't Symbian's forte. Symbian's strength lies in it's simplicity. My E90 just doesn't say: "Hack me!". WinMo begs to be hacked (and Android too).

I been having less than desirable experiences with the Nokia N series phones but I must say, the E66 I got is fantastic!!!

Wouldn't say no to an Apple 3GS...

I just got my iPhone 3GS 16Gb, jailbroken and on Vodacom and so far so good, no overheating yet. Thank goodness for the strong Rand cost me R4.8K
