was wondering what pings u getting with new 10mps lines?

i think seacom account will still be slow, because its just plain seacom lol


will post results of new 4gs network when it goes live, all ready seeing 12mps on speedtest and 4mbs upload o.0

Line speed does not affect ping. It's a common misconception due to internet speeds between different technologies. e.g. 56k gave bad pings, 64k isdn gave better pings, 384k adsl gave even better pings.

If you compare the same technologies the pings do not differ. 384k, 512k, 1mb,2mb,4mb,10mb adsl will all technically have the same speed. Ping speed is based on how many devices it has to route through and how good/fast those devices are at routing. If your ping has to go through a device that's shaping traffic it's going to get slowed down, for example.

Think of a hosepipe. Does the size of the pipe determine how fast the water can get from one end to the other? No, it's dependant on the pressure from the tap. The size of the pipe only determines how much water can get from end to end at a time.

Thats true although if I ping mweb from London I get a round trip of 120-150ms and from Cape Town to London is like 250-300ms.
If only we could get thoes ping times to Europe - someone need to sort out routing and shaping in SA.

Say you have a line speed of 384kbps, for normal wow play that is fine, the amount of data going around is way less than what the line can handle. When you start to raid the data flow increases beyond the amount of data that can be handled by that line, thus certain packets need to wait for flow to become available, thus increasing ping.

384k, normal play will be fine but with when loads of aoe, the speed will slow and might time-out and disconnect you
512k, normal play, awesome, raid with no aoe good, with loads of aoe you will get spikes
4mbps, the lag should stay the same doesnt matter what happens

My ping went up from a 200 - 225 range to a 250 - 275 range since my line speed was upped to 10mbps, still trying to figure that one out.
 
i know guy that dced non stop with hes upgrade 10mbs to 20mbs in uk, was because bad quality lan could be same with yours, so he had to go back to 10mb.

what go back to 4mbps and downlaod the p0rn at half the rate, never, the extra 25ms doesnt feel that bad - lol
 
Latency won't improve with a faster line. We still go over the same distance and connection.

Only way to improve this is by some new technology that still needs to be invented or if the WoW servers move closer to us :p
 
Well actually line speed does affect latency, only problem is I can't find the document that explained it properly. Doing a icmp ping in command prompt won't show you much of a difference from 4 to 10mbit, however once you start working with larger packets the difference become noticable.

To explain it, if there are a road with 1 lane, and 4 cars try to get into this 1 lane at the same time, they will have to go one after another causing a delay. Now when you go to a road with 2 lanes this will improve drastically, and once you go to a road with 4 lanes there will be no delay.

Thus it depends on the amount of data you want to send and receive through simultaneously. Now WoW doesn't use enough bandwidth to get to the point where there are more cars than lanes, in fact there will always be more lanes than cars, even for the upstream bandwidth.

Once your line get to 1mbit and up you will almost never notice the delay. What I have noticed is, I can download at 500kbyte/sec and upload at 50kbyte/sec in P2P applications and barely notice a difference in games, because there is still enough bandwidth left for the game, but once I max it out there is a increase in latency because te gaming packets have to wait for the P2P packets.

Conclusion, technically a bigger pine will give better latency, but un-noticable to most people. Technology causes bigger differences in most cases, Fibre connections will give you the better latency over ADSL, but most people won't afford that type of connection.
